  • Indian Land’s growth must be better managed

    We recently moved to Indian Land and are building a house in Van Wyck. We are struck by the opportunity and the risk ahead for Lancaster County.

    Ballantyne is growing at a rapid rate and will continue to grow down U.S. 521 toward Lancaster.

    We’re all for development, but if it is not properly managed, Indian Land will become the next Huntersville or Fort Mill and will be nothing but gridlock, overcrowded schools and poorly planned roads. With proper planning, the Panhandle can be the crown jewel of Lancaster County.

  • Today’s grads give reason for optimism

    For millions of young adults here in South Carolina and across the country, it’s an exciting and uncertain time – graduation time.

    Many South Carolina colleges have recently held May commencement exercises, and most high schools hold graduation ceremonies in late May or early June.

    For high school and college graduates alike, beginning a new chapter in life can be both exciting and scary.

    Seems like my more vocal neighbors up on the northern frontier are struggling for home rule. Home rule usually means you make your own laws and can amend financial support to the rest of Lancaster County.

  • Consider roundabouts instead of intersections

    Lancaster County’s northern Panhandle has been given a rare gift, with U.S. 521’s wide grass median.

    With this beautiful boulevard as a gateway to our community from the north, we have the opportunity to preserve and improve the way our roadways look to citizens, visitors and those wanting to establish businesses in our county.

    As a resident of Indian Land, I have seen tremendous growth in development of properties along the U.S. 521 and S.C. 160 corridor.

  • Power plants or animal factories?

    I am delighted that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finally moved to abate the disastrous impacts of climate change by regulating carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

    But, given the adverse reaction from the coal industry, the agency should have issued parallel regulations on emissions from meat industry operations. Each state could than determine its own optimal strategy for curbing greenhouse gases.

    A 2006 U.N. report estimated that meat production accounts for 18 percent of man-made greenhouse gases.

  • Correction

    There was an incorrect statement in my June 1 article, entitled “Democrats protect all Americans.” I said that voters in Lancaster County could not vote for Tim Scott. That proved to be incorrect.

    I called Lancaster County Voter Registration Office twice to verify that before writing the letter and I was given incorrect information.

    In my previous state, residents only voted for the senator in their district, not both senators.

    We would like to share our personal experiences as parents and grandparents in partnership with First United Methodist Church of Lancaster for the past three years.

    Within these years we have witnessed the education, hard work and sincere concern shown from the teachers, staff and the wonderful Pastor Charles Phillips for the children.

    Manners and sharing are always implemented and the evidence is in their everyday activities in the classroom and on the playground.

  • Solicitor must ‘go for the jugular’

    Listen up, Tom Holland and Randy Newman Jr., we, the law-abiding people of the county, are fed up with the way justice is being handled (or not) these days in Lancaster County. We’re sick and tired of reading The Lancaster News every week to see where another crime was committed by the same thug who was just let loose on bail one week, one month or one year ago.

  • Letter writer needs class on U.S. government

    In reference to Michael Jedson’s letter “Democrats protect all Americans,” in the June 1 edition of The Lancaster News, it is clear that he should return to high school. There, in a class on the United States government, he would discover that federal senatorial elections are statewide.

    Jedson said in his letter that Lancaster County residents live in Sen. Lindsay Graham’s district and could not vote for Sen. Tim Scott.

    U.S. Sen. Tim Scott will be on the ballot in November in every precinct in South Carolina.

  • Retired law officers support Holland

    As former law enforcement officers, we are very concerned with who will be our next solicitor.

    For those not familiar with our criminal justice system, the solicitor is the chief prosecuting attorney for our circuit, which includes Chester, Fairfield and Lancaster counties.

    The solicitor is in charge of prosecuting all criminals in general sessions court. This includes murderers, child molesters, rapists, armed robbers, burglars, thieves, etc.
