  • A love letter and challenge to Lancaster

    For those who don’t know me, I’m Jody Miles, director of Christian Services. Perhaps, you’ve followed my story in The Lancaster News. I am the one blessed with a new beginning as a result of a successful liver transplant last November.
    I want my community to know your prayers and friendship have touched me and so many others. Everywhere I go people say how encouraging my story is and that my outcome inspires hope for their own situations.

  • ‘Chinese’ auction is not an appropriate term

    I would like to express my concern over an expression that is frequently used in The Lancaster News. Almost once a week, some group suggests that it will be holding a Chinese auction.
    I believe some other description would be more appropriate. I do not understand how it is acceptable to use an adjective describing more than one billion of the world’s population to describe an auction.
    If this is acceptable, then perhaps other ethnic groups would not mind if their names were hooked onto specific fundraisers.

  • Writer wants same appraiser county uses

    There was a story in the June 15 edition of The Lancaster New about residents concerned about proposed tax hikes by Lancaster County Council.
    The story said council bought property for the Buford EMS station for $233,038 and that price was based on appraised value.
    The county will now be spending taxpayer money to demolish and remove the buildings on the new EMS property in addition to building the new station. My issue is not with having a new EMS station in Buford, because I definetly think one is needed. My issue is with the amount of spending by County Council.

  • Wake-up call to stop the nonsense in Washington

    I am sick and tired of the federal government pushing its unconstitutional agendas down our throats. 

    First, it shoved a useless so-called stimulus plan down our throats, (using our hard-earned tax dollars), then an unconstitutional health-care law, which will force government control of health care. 

    Now, it is ethanol in the gas pumps, which causes our cars to burn more gas and eventually will ruin the fuel systems in vehicles not built to run with ethanol.

  • LHS Class of 1951 enjoyed 60th reunion

    The Lancaster High School Class of 1951 held its 60th reunion June 4, 2011. Some traveled many miles to attend. They included LeJeune Davis from Texas, Bill Sistare from Florida, Johnny Blackmon Ghent, Nancy Criminger Sinclair and Johnny Willis from North Carolina, Mary Ann McWaters Wade and Mary Frances Evans from Columbia, Norma Whaley Richardson from Easley, Jimmie Durst Tardogna and Julie Sinclair Gasque from Rock Hill.

  • Adoption organizers grateful for support

    The County of Lancaster Animal Welfare Support (CLAWS) adoption/donation drive at Lancaster Animal Control on Saturday was great. There may not have been as many people turn up as we would have liked, but those who came were very giving.
    There were six adoptions – two cats, two kittens and two dogs. More than $200 in supplies was donated. More than $500 was also donated to CLAWS.

  • Afternoon matinee a hit with children and adults

    Hats off to See Lancaster’s Performing Arts Series for bringing Sunday matinees to Lancaster.
    On June 5, the summer matinees kicked off at the University of South Carolina Lancaster’s Bundy Auditorium with an outstanding play, “The Commedia Princess and The Pea,” presented by The Children’s Theatre’s Tarradiddle Players.
    From what I understand, the Tarradiddle Players travel North and South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, performing well-known plays.

  • Writer grateful for teachers

    I want to thank Buford Child Development Center.
    The teachers, Judy Jackson and Aubrey Adams, have been very helpful in helping Hailey Altman get ready for kindergarten. They have gotten her well rounded academically and socially.
    Hailey loves her teachers. We are proud of her and them.
