  • Letter: Some things we want in a sheriff

Here are some things about Sheriff Barry Faile.
He is honest, treats people with respect, does not steal. He runs on his own reputation.
The people of Lancaster know what Barry has done and will do.
Do we want a sheriff who we can respect and does not steal? If you do, vote for Barry Faile. Just as he has in the past, he will get the job done, A sheriff we can be proud of.

    Carl Miles
    Lancaster

  • Letter: Who is running to be our sheriff?

Mr. McCoy, I recently wrote a letter telling why Sheriff Barry Faile is the best and we the people vote him in every time. He’s smart! You, no comment.
I’m just wondering, Mr. McCoy, if you’re running for sheriff, or Mr. Malcolm Little is running for sheriff. It seems you cannot write anything that you hope will make the people of Lancaster vote for you until you OK it with Malcolm Little first. Does that mean we get two sheriffs?

  • Letter: A change to vegan diets would slow climate shift

With the 47th annual observance of Earth Day on Friday, this is a great time to explore more effective ways of slowing climate change and conserving Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
A 2010 U.N. report said animal agriculture accounted for 19 percent of man-made greenhouse gases – more than all transport – and recommended a global shift to a vegan diet. A subsequent World Watch study placed that contribution closer to 50 percent.

  • Letter: Media’s coverage of N.Y. primary more gam than grit

This Wednesday morning, I rushed to the television to get the results of the most recent voting in the northeast.
Did Trump carry enough votes to secure the GOP nomination?  Did Bernie Sanders call his campaign off?
What did I get on all the news channels?  A row of attractive political commentators on high stools displaying more gam that grit. Gosh, those skirts are shorter than the ruffles on grandma’s bloomers.
Where do they find these people  identified as the chief, CEO, staff political analyst  or some high sounding title?

  • Letter: Strategic plans should not be ‘one size fits all’

In keeping with the spirit of Editor Brian Melton’s call for civility and honest discourse, I will refrain from turning this letter into one on the personal and professional integrity of candidate William McCoy.
When questioned with regards to the alleged plagiarism of material obtained from another jurisdiction, it is sad that anyone associated with a campaign would even jokingly condone or justify stealing in any form, especially as it pertains to the highest elected position responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the community.

  • Letter: McCoy’s decision ‘absolute disgrace’

Credibility. Honesty. Integrity. Accountability. These are all attributes  that the citizens of Lancaster County not only expect but demand from their public officials.
William McCoy’s remarkable “word for word” rendition of most of the Garner Police Department Strategic Plan is an absolute disgrace for a man asking the voters of Lancaster to elect him to public office.

  • Letter: Proud of Indian Land Middle School and all of its supporters

I want to thank Principal Chris Thorpe and all the staff at Indian Land Middle School for all the guidance they provide for our kids.
I feel safe letting my child out in the morning, knowing he will get the best of care.
The front-office staff is always very efficient and kind every time I ask for help. And all the great teachers do so much for our kids. And thank you to our special police officer for the great way he keeps us safe and on time.

  • Schmidt letter: N.C. HB2 law is not bigotry

North Carolina’s HB2 law is simple and proper – only use the restroom that matches your biological sex.
Apple and Cisco, among other companies, are insisting that North Carolina force everyone to accept or allow people to use the restroom of their choice. They are threatening to leave the state. Why aren’t they threatening to leave Iran or Saudi Arabia, who are actually murdering homosexuals?

  • Chavis letter: McCoy needs better reason to run

Billy McCoy has filed to run for sheriff of Lancaster because, quote, “He (Sheriff Faile) has been in office long enough.” Also, he states that Sheriff Faile has relatives who once were sheriff. What does that have to do with Barry Faile?
In my opinion, there is no time limit for the office of sheriff as long as the job is getting done, and that it is. Sheriff Faile and his department are doing an excellent job, so why change?
Billy McCoy, if that is your main reason for running for sheriff of Lancaster, then you should rethink this idea.

  • Letter: Springs Memorial thanks volunteers

Author Kurek Ashley wrote: “The quality of your life will be determined by the quality of your contribution. When you work to improve the lives of others, then your life improves automatically.”
This is a very fitting quote for this time of year, as we at Springs Memorial Hospital honor our volunteers next week during National Volunteer Week.
