Letters

t is not too often that I read The Lancaster News anymore, but I still try to read the hometown paper every now and again to get an understanding of what is going on in my community. I especially enjoy reading the letters to the editor. I believe that it is an important part of free speech to have your thoughts published in a space that is designed for you to voice your opinion.

’Tis the season and we are all rushing around buying gifts for family and friends and trying not to forget anyone. When you are in the pet aisle of your favorite store and as you reach for that Christmas stocking full of toys and treats for that special family member, please stop and think a minute about the homeless pets being housed in your local animal shelter.

Where was Jimmy Carter when we needed him?
Following his term as president, Carter has traveled the world building houses for Habitat for Humanity and building democracies by monitoring elections.
I don’t know where Jimmy was on Nov. 6, but we certainly could have used him in Richland County, where we had an election that if it were called “Third World,” would defame Third-World countries.

Recently, a young woman came into our business wanting to buy a car.
She wanted us to do the financing, so I asked some basic questions. She lived in Lancaster and I asked her where she worked. She said she didn’t work, but she got a $1,400 monthly check from the government.
I don’t think she noticed that my mouth dropped open when she said that. We were unable to help her with the financing because she didn’t have the deposit amount that was required.
