  • Letter: Sun City dweller is feeling gouged

I read your Nov. 26 article with interest regarding Indian Land jobs and skyrocketing income.
We purchased our home in Sun City 10½ years ago for cash after selling our home in Raintree (N.C.) after 24-plus years.
In all these years, I have always felt gouged at the Water Department since two seniors (wife and myself) pay on average $60 per month for water. Our home in Charlotte was almost twice the size, three children still lived with us then and the water was about half the cost.

  • Letter: Transplant will vote no to incorporation

I read with dismay the news about the Indian Land incorporation initiative. I am relocating with my family from Pennsylvania to South Carolina for the warm weather, nice people and especially the low taxes and low cost of living.

  • Letter: New post office should be in center of IL

Regarding the new U.S. post office in the 29707 ZIP code – the area known as Indian Land.
Postal officials were quoted as saying they have listened to the people and have moved the location of the new 29707 post office west of Lowe’s near S.C. 160.
I don’t believe they listen too good.
Why do we need a new post office only a few miles from the Fort Mill 29715 post office? Why do we want it close to the North Carolina state line?

  • Letter: Not all social media news is ‘fake’

I feel compelled to tell you that I really enjoy the paper.
The article in the Nov. 8 edition about James Elliott “Willy” Williams was fantastic for this Veterans Day edition. Truly a local hero.

  • Letter: Must slow down S.C. 5, U.S. 521

Are any police departments going to slow down traffic on S.C. 5 and U.S. 521?
I live on Highway 5 and can’t get out on the road to go somewhere.
On Halloween I was on 5 and a dump truck was on my bumper from Tenacity Court to the cement plant. It almost ran into me when I pulled off to let him by. There have been three times since then.
I try to drive the speed limit, but the trucks don’t. Highway 5 and 521 are racetracks.

  • Letter: Victim’s kin thank Buford, other VFDs

My name is Cleavon Belk and I’m writing for myself and my brother, Donnie R. Belk of the Buford community.
Our nephew Eric T. Belk of Buford died in a house fire in the early morning on Sunday, Oct. 15.
We would like to thank the Buford Volunteer Fire Department’s firefighters for their heroic actions, and all firefighters from the other cities and communities who responded to this fire as well.
My brother would like to encourage the community to support their local volunteer fire departments financially and in any other way that they can.

  • Letter: Is Archie Parnell ready for the swamp?

Mark Manicone’s Oct. 25 article about Archie Parnell’s new campaign for Congress had me asking questions. After careful consideration, here are my views.
Parnell takes President Trump’s basic ideas that the USA needs good jobs, tax changes and strong communities. He claims Congress – that’s the House and Senate – has not accomplished anything over the last months.

  • Letter: VFW Auxiliary thanks Talbots for fundraiser

The Capt. John P. Monahan VFW Post 12136 Auxiliary would like to thank Talbots of Blakeney for the opportunity to raise money for our post relief fund.
Talbots generously gave our auxiliary a percentage of its sales Nov. 10 in honor of Veterans Day. Our auxiliary members were able to talk to Talbots’ customers to share our reasons for the fundraiser. Because of this opportunity, we will be able to help veterans and their families in need.

  • Letter: Did you get your county tax notice?

At the end of October or early November, Lancaster County homeowners should have received their property tax bills, which must be paid no later than Jan. 15, 2018, to avoid penalties.
If you have not received your tax bill, please contact our office to help locate your bill and make sure we have the correct address on file for you.
If your tax bill is paid from escrow, the mortgage company will gather their information electronically from us, but to make sure proper payment is made, you can forward them the information that you received from us in the mail.

  • Letter: Name new school after county astronaut

My choice for naming the new school would be Charles Duke Elementary.
