  • Only fools don’t change with the times

    This is a response to Bruce Miller’s guest column, “Put America first, not your political party,” published in the Dec. 30, 2011, edition of The Lancaster News.
    I really would prefer not to agree with a depressed Republican/tea party supporter. Yes, you gave U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney the benefit of the doubt.
    Unfortunately the tea party experience produced congressional gridlock. The lobbyists appear to be in charge and few in the House or Senate appear to have any backbone to stop it.

  • We are Lancaster! Really, I must be missing something

    Don’t get me wrong. I was born and raised in Lancaster and, for the most part, I am proud to call it home.
    I see and hear people complaining about the article published on CNN. I didn’t agree with it totally, but everyone should realize that this town has been on a steady decline business-wise ever since Springs Industries moved out of Lancaster.

  • Accident victim grateful for help

    We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for the many acts of kindness shown during the motorcycle accident that occurred on Jan. 25, on Great Falls Highway. Thanks for the prompt response shown by the owner of  Tire Depot, EMS workers, fire departments, bystanders and a special thanks to Malcolm Benson for praying with me as I was pinned under the car.
    Thanks to The Lancaster News for your exemplary coverage of the accident, which helped me to engage the community in prayer on my behalf.

  • Indian Land could become Cherry Road

    Yes sir, “We are Lancaster.” As one of our folks in Indian Land says. “We are the most confusing place.”
    All I can say is, “Honey, I was born in this confusing place 79 years ago and it’s still confusing.”  Growing up, I quickly found out that it was just as far up the road to Mr. Pettus’s Cotton Gin as it was down the road from his  cotton gin.

  • Hardins grateful for community support

    On Dec. 29, 2009, our lives were forever changed. As parents, our worst nightmare had been realized.
    We lost our oldest daughter, Elyse Rebecca Hardin, 15, in a tragic automobile wreck. Little sister, Ashlyn, lost her only sibling. We had no idea how we would ever be able to get through the days that followed.
    Three of our dear friends, Rena Walker, Shannon Thorne, and Teresa Brown, knew that it would be important to us to turn this tragedy into something positive. There had to be a way to reach out and help the youth in our area and honor Elyse at the same time.

  • Why isn’t drunk driver still in jail?

    On Jan. 8, my daughter and I were the first ones on the scene of an accident on Harrisburg Road in Indian Land.
    The driver, William Justin Rigsbee of Indian Land, was drunk and there were open containers in the vehicle and all over the road.
    My 10-year-old daughter found the passenger, Steve Lee Jones of Charlotte, in a ditch. He had been thrown from the vehicle, which had flipped. The passenger died there. This was very traumatic for my daughter.
    I just found out that the drunk driver has been released from jail on bond.
