  • It is past time for citizens to take back Lancaster County

    Lancaster County Council tabled the proposed B-3 ordinance at its May 21 meeting with comments from council members Charlene McGriff and Kathy Sistare that they “would not be stampeded into doing anything.”
    These comments seem to have been triggered by a flood of e-mails from the public expressing frustration at the refusal of council to allow the B-3 ordinance on the agenda for the May 14 meeting.

  • Senate makes progress during spring session

    So far, this session of the S.C. General Assembly has been productive. I’m pleased with the progress that has been made on several fronts, including improving the structure of state government. Listed below are some issues, both large and small, that we have been addressing.

    If you own an old car and it is stolen, chances are it’s heading to a scrap yard. Nine out of 10 cars stolen in South Carolina are eight years old or older. They can be sold to scrap dealers without proof of ownership.

  • S.C. voters biggest losers in filing fiasco

    By now, you probably know about the glitch we experienced in our election process here in the Palmetto State. About 180 potential candidates across our state were not allowed on the June 12 ballot due to filing inappropriately.
    A little history here: Since 1992, there has been a requirement to file a hard (paper) copy of the Statement of Economic Interest (SEI) at the same time as filing the Intention of Candidacy and paying the filing fee.

  • May is Older Americans Month in South Carolina

    As your new lieutenant governor, I am our state’s chief advocate for one of the fastest- growing senior populations in the nation.
    South Carolina’s senior population has seen a 319 percent increase in the last 40 years, and the population 60 years and over is projected to increase by nearly 160 percent by the year 2030, with more than 1.3 million Baby Boomers set to retire in South Carolina.

  • Take time to honor our freedom fighters

    Monday May 28, 2012, is Memorial Day. It’s a day we Americans set aside to remember those valiant Americans who laid their lives on the line to protect the wonderful freedoms we now enjoy in this great Republic.
    If you have a world map, or even better, a world globe, I invite you to pick it up and stab a point anywhere on it with one finger. Chances are you put that finger very close to a place where an American was killed, injured or perhaps buried while defending America’s freedom.

  • Logan helped save local soldier’s life

    Flags carefully placed along streets, freshly polished monuments and markers, neatly mown grass where the fallen now silently lie – the almost antiseptic appearance belies the horrors that brought those who sacrificed their most precious gift to their final resting place.

  • County Council needs public input on budget

    The Lancaster County budget pro­posed for fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013) has been post­ed on the county website for a couple of weeks and has been the topic of discus­sion by the County Council Finance Committee (council members Larry McCullough as chairman, Jack Estridge and Charlene McGriff) at meetings on April 30, May 7 and 14.

  • Take the time to thank officers during this week

    During National Police Week, which is May 13-19, I’d like to encourage you to take the time to recognize our local law enforcement officers for their service to the Lancaster community. 
    Our officers’ face many risks and challenges and their sacrifice and service are often taken for granted.
    If you encounter a deputy, police officer, highway patrolman or corrections officer, show your support and let them know how much their work means to you this week.
