  • Column: How to make America great again? There’s only 1 option

    Donald Trump says it every day: “Let’s make America great again.” The slogan adorns his hats.
    Hillary Clinton criticizes Trump for that, insisting America is already great. But she used the phrase herself in 2007, while making her case against the Bush administration.
    After a decade and a half of trouble on many fronts, most of us would love to see America restored to a former state of greatness – economic, military, political, moral or some combination of those.

  • Robbie Helms captures Renegade win

    Last Saturday’s races at Lancaster Motor Speedway included Montgomery Towing Super Stock, Deal 1 Auto Sales SECA Crate Sportsman, Cauthen Motors Renegades, M&M Garage Extreme 4 and U.S. Bonding Vintage.
    Montgomery Towing Super Stock finishing order was  Brandy Baker, Jason Gulledge, Joseph Engelbrecht, Elias Grant, Johnny Starkey, Andrew Winderl and Michael Stuart.

  • LHS swimmers top RNE

    The Lancaster High School swim team continued its winning ways, taking a lopsided 265-62 win over Richland Northeast on Thursday night.
    The LHS girls won 129-38 and the Bruins took a 136-24 victory over the Cavaliers.
    Lauren Spencer, Luis Bravo, Makenzy Mills, Alaina Houghtaling and Jacques Caravaca each had two wins for Lancaster.
    Braydon Powers, Taylor Teague, Andres Cuella, Samuel Page and Simon Wright each had a first to aid the Lancaster win.
    The Bruins, after dropping a close loss to Blythewood, have reeled off three straight wins.

  • Lady Jackets look to rebound this week

    The Buford High School Lady Jackets volleyball team will look to get back on track this week in Region IV-AA court play.
    The Lady Jackets, the defending region volleyball champions, dropped a 3-0 home match to North Central High School on Thursday.
    NCHS, the region runner-up last season to BHS, rolled to the win, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17. A year ago, Buford and North Central split in regular-season play, with BHS capturing the crown in a special playoff match at Central High School in Pageland.
    Buford will visit North Central for a Region IV-AA rematch Oct. 4.

  • County duo to open region play

    The 2016 Lancaster County high school football season is just into its first month of play, and two schools are looking at the “second season.”
    Buford and Andrew Jackson launch Region IV-AA play Friday night.
    The Jackets, 1-3, are home to battle Lee Central High School of Bishopville, while AJ has a short bus ride in store, with the 2-1 Volunteers venturing to Boonetown to face North Central in neighboring Kershaw County.
    Lancaster and Indian Land are still in non-region games.

    The true test of political leadership is making the hard, long-term and right decision instead of the easy, short term and wrong decision.
    Said differently, do our political leaders genuinely work to solve problems or do they just kick the can down the road?
    Unfortunately for our state, kicking the can down the road has been the unofficial sport of the State House crowd for nearly a generation. Can-kicking results from politicians who refuse to look down the road farther than the next election. For too many, making tough decisions is just not in their nature.

  • John and Anne McCulloch Anniversary

    John and Anne McCulloch of Lancaster will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 14, 2016.
    The couple was married Sept. 14, 1956, in Atlanta, Ga.
    The McCullochs have two children, Becky Taylor and her husband, Darren, of Irmo and Russell McCulloch and his wife, Joni, of Alpharetta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Jenna, Michael and Thomas.

    Robert and Libby Threatt and Jeff and Patti Reynolds announce the engagement of their daughter, Jesse Elizabeth Reynolds, all of Lancaster, to Bradley Knight of Kershaw.
    The wedding is planned for 5 p.m. Nov. 5, 2016, at Harmony Oak Farms.

    Joseph and Beverly Adams and Sandra and Seth Rodgers announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Brooke Adams, to Michael Christopher Cooper, all of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 5 p.m. Oct. 23, 2016, in Monroe, N.C.
    Miss Adams is the granddaughter of Betty Catoe, the late Curtis Catoe, Linda Adams, the late David Adams, Donna Sellers and the late Delbert Sellers, all of Lancaster. She is a 2008 graduate of Lancaster High School, and a 2012 college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in nursing science. She is a nurse.

  • Brumfield - Butts Wedding

    Paige Brumfield Butts and Ryan James Butts were married April 9, 2016, at Brakefield at Riverwalk in Rock Hill.
    The bride is the daughter of Bruce and Michelle Brumfield of Lancaster. She is the granddaughter of Donald and Diana Mortensen of Lancaster and Jewell and Evelyn Brumfield of Bogalusa, La.
    She is a 2008 graduate of Lancaster High School and a 2012 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in exercise science, and a 2015 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a doctorate in physical therapy. She works as a physical therapist.
