  • Warriors fall to Griffins Thursday night

    The Indian Land Warriors had a tough night on the hardwood at Fairfield Central High School of Winnsboro on Thursday night.

    The Warriors dropped both ends of the Region IV-AAA hoops doubleheader with the Griffins.

    The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but moved to Thursday after Fairfield Central High School officials asked the games to be reset due to illness on the team.

    The Griffins, in the boys game, took a 79-55 win over the Warriors.

  • AJ girls complete unbeaten season

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Middle School girls basketball team capped a perfect season for the conference championship with a resounding win Thursday night at North Central Middle School in Boonetown.

    The AJMS Lady Vols, 14-0, used a fast start to key a 42-6 win over NCMS.

    AJ Middle wasted no time in getting started, bolting to a 13-0 lead after a quarter of play.

  • AJ’s Sowell tabbed for Classic

    KERSHAW – Prior to the 2016-17 high school basketball season, Andrew Jackson High School Lady Volunteers star Alexxus Sowell was tabbed as one of the top senior girls players in Class AA.

    Sowell’s play over the season has earned her recognition as one of the Carolinas’ top girls players.

  • Jackets pad new streak with victory

    The Buford High boys basketball team is on a new streak after taking a second straight Region IV-AA win to highlight a league road sweep of North Central on Friday night.
    BHS, which snapped a 12-game losing skid in a home win over Chesterfield on Tuesday night, followed with a 52-45 comeback win over the Knights.  In the opener, the Lady Jackets also prevailed in a 56-47 win.
    North Central’s boys opened a 17-10 lead after one period, but the Jackets rallied to make it 26-23 at the half.

  • Early surge keys Lady Jackets’ win

    The Buford Lady Jackets took control early and rolled to a 54-37 win over Central at the BHS gym on Tuesday night.
    The Lady Jackets’ 17-point win gave Buford a split of the Region IV-AA hoops twin bill after the CHS boys posted a 60-28 win over the Jackets.
    The Lady Jackets built an early edge, taking an 11-6 lead after one period.
    Buford’s girls, sparked by Sophie Ribelin’s solid first-half  play, led 25-14 at the half after outscoring the Lady Eagles, 14-8 in the second period for the 11-point halftime lead.

  • Thornwell on Naismith Top 30 list

    COLUMBIA – University of South Carolina senior guard Sindarius Thornwell was named to the Naismith Trophy Top 30 list on Thursday by Atlanta Tipoff Club.
    The list is comprised of the nation’s top basketball players under consideration for the 2017 Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year award. Ten semifinalists for the honor will be announced on March 1.
    Thornwell, of Lancaster, is having a career year at USC in the 2016-17 hoops season.

  • Rams cap unbeaten season

    The A.R. Rucker Rams impressively put the finishing touches on an unbeaten basketball season and a conference title with a decisive win over rival South Middle School in the Lancaster High School gym on Wednesday night.
    The Rams charged to a 75-40 win over the Mustangs to wrap up a 17-0 season.
    The Rucker boys’ win came after the Lady Rams cruised to a 41-11 win over the Lady Mustangs.
    The Rams started fast against the Mustangs and were in complete control for the victory.

  • Volunteers drop pair to LC Stallions

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Volunteer teams lost their Region IV-AA games with the Lee Central Stallions on Tuesday night in their final home basketball game of the regular season.
    Lee Central rallied to edge sixth-ranked AJ girls, 39-38 and the No. 4 Stallions topped the sixth-rated Vols, 80-72 in the Vols gym.
    The Lady Vols came out with the lead at the end of the first quarter, 10-7. The Lady Vols scored five unanswered points to lead at the half, 27-19.

  • BHS wrestlers split in Upstate playoff matches

    The Buford High School wrestling team finished the 2016-17 season with a 10-15-1 record after splitting in the Class AA Upper State playoffs dual tournament at Cheraw on Feb. 4.
    Buford opened with a 38-21 win over Keenan, but then fell to Region IV-AA champion and top seed Cheraw, 54-21.
    Buford, in the playoff matches, was led by David James (two wins), A.J. George (two pins), Dakota Barton (two wins with a pin), and Matthew Wallace (two wins).
    Blake Bailey, Webber Moore and Trey Bobbitt each had a win.

  • Late rallies spark Cavs to sweep of Bruins

    Fourth-quarter charges sparked Richland Northeast to a Region III-AAAA sweep of Lancaster High School on Tuesday night.
    The Cavaliers, in both games in the varsity twin bill, spurted late to notch wins over the host Bruins.
    The RNE boys, in a battle with the Bruins, took a 53-47 win after the Lady Cavaliers posted a 56-44 victory.
    The nightcap was tight throughout as LHS battled the Cavs to the wire.
    Richland Northeast held a 35-33 lead going to the final period.
