  • Softball fundraiser to help Charlee’s family

    Three-year-old Charlee Rivers is developing quite a following.
    Charlee, who was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, may need a new heart.
    A group of supporters led by local youth coach and official Fuzzy Bass are holding a two-day softball fundraiser in Heath Springs later this month to help her family with medical costs. Charlee is the daughter of Chucky and Dustee Rivers.

  • Bamberg ousts Lancaster Ponytails from state tourney

    MARION – The Lancaster Dixie Softball Ponytails all-stars saw their state title hopes end Monday with a 17-6 loss to Bamberg.
    The ponytails all-stars rebounded to stay alive in state tournament play Sunday with a resounding 18-2 win over host Marion.
    In Monday’s game, the ponytails, ages 11-12, trailed Bamberg, 5-0, but rallied in the third inning to tie the score at 5-all.
    However, Bamberg answered with five runs to build a 10-5 advantage and then kept it for the 11-run victory.

    It was the worst of times. America and the rest of the world was at war. All up and down Chesterfield Avenue, boys and girls were collecting old newspapers, aluminum pots, rubber tires and hose pipes. This was our first taste of recycling, and that word hadn’t even been invented yet.

    The wedding is planned for 7 p.m. July 29, 2016, at Carnes Lake.

    Miss Roney is the granddaughter of Bill and Sherry Outen, the late Bronna Ackerman and the late George and Frances Roney. She is a 2009 graduate of Lancaster High School and a graduate of York Technical College. She is a medical office assistant at New Day Family Medicine.

    Richard Wagner of Colorado and Bridgett Miller of Spartanburg announce the engagement of their daughter, Carmisha Ne’Shel Miller, to Jared Larnel White, both of Spartanburg.

    The wedding is planned for Sept. 17, 2016, at Foster Grove Baptist Church in Chesnee.

    Floyd “Billy” Foster Sr. and Rachel White Foster celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 2, 2016.

    The couple celebrated with a drop-in reception at the Lynwood Drive Church of God fellowship hall.

    They were married July 2, 1966, in Lancaster.

  • Buford 3rd grade teacher spends summer learning sign language

    To bridge the gap between the hearing and deaf communities, Buford Elementary School third-grade teacher Mary Anna Wilkes is spending her summer learning American Sign Language.

    Wilkes’ interest in learning sign language started at her previous job with the Head Start program at Southside Elementary School 10 years ago, where she had the opportunity to work with young children who had hearing impairments.
