  • Stamp Out Hunger

Now in its 21st year, the food drive is the largest single-day food drive in the United States. Food collected in Lancaster County is delivered to HOPE in Lancaster. Murdock is a member of the HOPE board of directors. Last year, more than 9,000 pounds of food benefited HOPE’s food pantry.

  • Thank law officers for their sacrifices

    This week, you will hear a great deal about National Police Week, and what it means to us in the law enforcement field and the families of the officers who serve in this capacity.
    National Police Week was created in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week within which it falls as Police Week. Many of the events and activities associated with National Police Week are held in Washington, D.C., where homage is paid to those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

  • Group renews effort to incorporate IL

    A group of Indian Land residents, fed up with what they say is the county’s lack of movement on dire issues affecting the community has reinvigorated its efforts to garner support for incorporation as a municipality.

    Though activity by the special interest group Indian Land Voice flagged somewhat last year, the group now has new officers, a second wind and is pressing forward in the process.

  • More houses being built in the county?

    Statistics suggest more houses are being built in the county.

    The Market Edge, a company that gathers building-permit information, released data last month that shows trends for counties in the Charlotte region, including Lancaster County.

    According to the report, 766 residential building permits were issued in Lancaster County in 2012. The year before, 585 were issued.

  • Drive-by shooting at Pardue Street apartment complex

    Two Lancaster residents were not harmed after someone shattered their glass front door during an apparent drive-by shooting May 3. 

    Police raced to the 1800 block of Pardue Street about 11:35 p.m. after receiving a 911 call that someone fired between five and six gunshots in that area, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report. 

    Officers arrived to find a large crowd in the area and also noticed a shattered screen door at a nearby apartment, the report said.

  • Thank you, with a hug

    Melissa Peach hugs S.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Randy Walters at Chick-fil-A on May 4 during a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Peach was thanking Walters and the other troopers for their service. Today, May 15, is Peace Officers Memorial Day. There will be a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. today at the Lancaster County Law Enforcement Officers Memorial behind Lancaster County Courthouse. Residents are urged to take time this week to tell law officers how much their service is appreciated.

  • IL's Gregory leads county athletes in state meet

    Indian Land High School senior runner James Gregory led the Lancaster County athletes in the Class AA state meet Saturday, May 11 at Lower Richland High School.

    Gregory, who has signed to run cross country at Erskine College, placed third in the 800-meter run to win a bronze medal.
