  • Teacher’s victorious return pushes me far past the point of tears

Editor’s note: This occasional column takes you behind the scenes with Hannah Strong, who has been reporting for a little more than a year.

I run backward down a hallway at Buford Elementary School.
My eyes are full of tears.
I can barely see what I’m filming and taking photos of, and I just can’t seem to hold my emotions back.
I’m almost jogging ahead of teacher Laura Grimm as she takes a well-deserved victory lap around the school because of the good news she received just days ago.

  • Editor's Column: I could have brought my AK-47, says the raging man with the axe

I can’t stop thinking about the 11th paragraph of a Nov. 8 story on our front page.
A 44-year-old Lancaster man was accused of trying to break in on his estranged wife, screaming that he would dismember her and a fellow she was with. He had arrived with a .38 revolver, a knife, an axe, a metal baton and a set of throwing knives, according to the incident report.
In the 11th graph, the suspect told the arresting deputy: “I could have come over here with my AK-47 and AR-15 and… nobody would have had a chance.”

  • Cherokee Speedway hosts second leg of Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100

Leg two of the Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100 continues today.
Gaffney’s Cherokee Speedway will host day two of one of the Carolinas biggest dirt track races.
The Blue Gray 100 is now known as the Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100, held in memory of Duvall, who died earlier this year.
Duvall is regarded as a household name in dirt track racing across the country. Duvall’s car was known as the Flinstone Flyer.
Fans, in Duvall’s heyday, said when he came to a track, the drivers were racing for second.
