  • Officer: Four people tried to take law into their own hands

    Four people are behind bars after authorities say they kidnapped a Lancaster County man and then broke into a Woodcreek apartment home at gunpoint.

    Terrance Jaleel Frames, 21, of 802 Hampton Road; Calvin Webster Gladden, 29, of 1787 W. Meeting St.; Brandon Theodis McIlwain, 23, of 802 Hampton Road; and Sherie Jenita Myers, 25, of 706 Chesterfield Ave. were each charged Friday with first-degree burglary and kidnapping charges.

  • Capital projects slashed in county budget

    Cut back.

    That's what Councilman Wayne Kersey suggested the county do when County Administrator Steve Willis gave council the grim news about the 2008-09 county budget.

    Kersey said he didn't want to continue to burden the people of Lancaster County. The budget right now is $30.2 million, up 5 percent from last year.

  • USDA program helps family buy their first home

    For years, Carolyn Taylor dreamed of being a home owner. And thanks in part to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that dream is now a reality.

    Carolyn Taylor, who lived in public housing for more than nine years, bought her first home in March.

    She moved into a 1,300-square-foot house on Froebe Drive after being approved for a Section 502 loan from the USDA's Rural Development. The loans are mainly used to help low-income families buy homes in rural areas.

  • Man on trial for '06 shooting death

    The state rested its case Tuesday afternoon in the death of Lamont Witherspoon, who suffered a fatal gunshot on a Lancaster street while others stood close by in December 2006.

    Jerry McGriff, 38, of Lancaster, is on trial for the murder.

    The state alleges that McGriff shot Witherspoon after an altercation outside the Taylor Street residence of Barbara Green, who the two men were reportedly romantically involved with.

  • Organizers hope air show will attract big crowds

    Organizers of an air show at the Lancaster County Airport/McWhirter Field hope the event will draw people from all over the region.

    The 2008 Palmetto Thunder Air Show, slated for May 17 and 18, will feature action from jets, helicopters and World War II-era bombers.

    See Lancaster Executive Director Frank Keel, one of the event's local organizers, hopes for $120,000 in ticket sales and 10,000 people each day.

    "It's going to be big," Keel said. "Hopefully, we'll attract local folks and those from the Charlotte and Rock Hill area."

  • Thomas: Former Continental workers should have say

    County Council unanimously approved first reading Monday night to approve a fee-in-lieu of taxes agreement with MacMillan Investments.

    MacMillan Investments is likely better known for its lease to a corporate headquarters for Continental Tire. MacMillan Investments is part of Springland and Forsite Development.

    Continental Tire will move 300 employees to a 75,000-square-foot building at McMillan Business Park on S.C. 160, a $10 million investment. Contractors have finished grading, and construction is expected to be completed in early 2009,

  • USCL awards diplomas in ceremony

    Saturday's graduation at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster was a big step for Jeremy Stroud.

    The 33-year-old history major tried his luck at college several years ago, but says he didn't have the focus to succeed. After going from city to city playing in a small rock band, he realized it was time to go back to school and work toward a career.

    He was awarded an associate's in science degree during the ceremony at USCL's Bundy Auditorium.

    The keynote address from former Gov. Jim Hodges resonated with Stroud.

  • BES reports MRSA case

    A case of MRSA was confirmed in a Buford Elementary School student last week.

    Lancaster County School District spokesman David Knight said the female student left school sick on Tuesday and the diagnosis was confirmed later that day with school officials being informed.

    That afternoon, as per standard procedure, areas of the school that could have been contaminated were cleaned, Knight said.

  • Community observes National Day of Prayer

    Kelly McCorkle Parkinson says prayer helped her to face barriers that many people thought she would never overcome.

    Parkinson, the 2002 Miss South Carolina, was diagnosed with dyslexia and auditory processing disability when she was 5.

    Teachers told her mother that she would never graduate and that the family should make alternate plans for her life.

    She took dance classes as a youngster, but instructors said she was wasting her money – as they believed she would never be able to keep up.

  • CHS Rams win III-A golf title

    Chesterfield shot a 319 to capture the Conference III-A golf title on Wednesday.The Rams were led by tournament medalist Dalton Harper who shot a 78. Ian Harper, an all-region pick, followed with a 79 to boost CHS. Cody Gainey also earned all-region honors for the Rams with an 80.Great Falls was second with a 359.
