Doctors told Teresa and Ernie Blackmon that their youngest daughter, Rachael, was deaf when she was 19 months old.
Teresa Blackmon, a nurse, said she had believed something was wrong with Rachael when she was just a year old. She said Rachael had started to say “Mama” and “Daddy” but then stopped. At a year old, Rachael didn’t react to people’s voices or turn toward sounds.
When the family received the diagnosis about 16 years ago, Teresa Blackmon said her first thought was, “Lord, why did you do this to us?”
