  • Christmas Basket Fund to run until new year

    Christmas is a little brighter for many local families, thanks to the continued success of the Ward Faulkenberry Memorial Christmas Basket fund.

    The fund, which provides food vouchers for those in need, has collected nearly $9,000, according to the latest tallies Wednesday. And the good news is that you can contribute to the effort through the rest of the year.

    Food vouchers are given based on the number of people in each household. Recipients can use those vouchers at local grocery stores.

  • Man fights retired trooper after scuffle with wife at restaurant

    What was supposed to be a lunch trip with his three small children turned into a scuffle with a stranger for one retired state trooper last week. 

    Lancaster police officers were called to Pizza Hut, at 1100 S.C. 9 Bypass, just after 3 p.m. Dec. 13 about a fight between two patrons, according to a police department incident report.

  • Man hit, suffers facial fractures

    The Lancaster Police Department issued a warrant last week for a man who allegedly fractured another man's skull during a brief assault earlier this month. 

    The victim, a 49-year-old Arch Street resident, spoke with a Lancaster police officer Dec. 9 about the assault as he was being treated in the emergency room of Springs Memorial Hospital, according to a police incident report.

  • County Council OKs new voting machines

    Determined to reduce waiting times at county polling places during the next election cycle, Lancaster County Council approved the purchase of several voting machines at its recent meeting.

    Council voted 6-0 to approve a request from the county's Election Commission to buy 30 more iVotronic touch-screen voting machines. Councilman Cotton Cole was absent from the meeting.

  • Preacher Mickey still has me smiling

    The late Rev. Mickey Carnes really knew how to spin a yarn.

    Every time I crossed paths with Preacher Mickey, as I fondly called him, I left laughing. To be honest, I’m grinning right now. 

    Preacher Mickey died Saturday. I miss him already, but I can’t quit smiling.

  • Program aimed at saving teens’ lives

    The Lancaster County School District is gearing up for a new program next year aimed at reducing the number of teen drivers killed or seriously injured in automobile accidents.
    In an effort to encourage student participation, school board members voted unanimously Dec. 13 to peg completion of the program, called Alive at 25, to student parking permits.

  • Jobless rate in county declines

    Lancaster County is following a statewide and national trend that officials see as a positive sign for the economy.
    The county posted a 12.6 unemployment rate for November, which is a significant improvement from the 14.1 percent in October. In comparison, the county’s November 2010 jobless rate was 15.9 percent, according to recent figures from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.
