    At one point Sunday afternoon, Sue Hyatt feared for her life.
    Hyatt, who lives on Grace Avenue, was a few blocks from her home when the rain began to fall hard and the wind blew at high speeds.
    The downpour became so heavy that she had to pull her Honda Accord off the road and wait for the rain to die down. She said she didn’t know what to do.

  • Job fair set for Oct. 1

    If you’re looking for a job, the Lancaster Adult Education campus in Lancaster is the place to be Saturday, Oct. 1.
    The campus, located at 610 E. Meeting St., is hosting the Workforce Action Team Job Fair sponsored by Lancaster County Workforce Action Team (WAT) and Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. (LCEDC).
    The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 7 p.m. and pre-registration is strongly suggested.

    INDIAN LAND – You can’t go wrong with family-friendly fun and chili – just ask anyone who attended this year’s Indian Land Fall into Fun Festival and S.C. State Chili Championship on Saturday at Indian Land Middle School.
    Sponsored by the Indian Land Rotary Club, the events drew thousands this year, despite the occasional rain shower.

    When it comes to adding variety, flavor and aroma to foods, herbs and spices have been used for centuries.

    “Spices were once so costly only the wealthy could afford them. In 11th century Europe, many towns paid their taxes and rent in pepper,” said dietitian and educator Alice Henneman, author of “Add a Little Spice (& Herbs) to Your Life!”

    While it is a given that spices and herbs both come from for plants, that’s where the similarity ends, said Ann Hertzler of Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.

  • Arrest made in armed robbery

    A combination of surveillance footage and tips from the community helped police arrest a Lancaster man only hours after he fired a gun inside a convenience store.
    Montavious Winkfield, 24, 108 Seaboard Circle, was arrested at his home at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after a flood of tips poured into the Lancaster Police Department. He was arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery Monday at Midway Grocery, located at 426 W. Meeting St., according to a police department press release.

    The Lancaster High swim team capped regular-season action with a 236-90 win over Ridge View.

    Hannah Jacobs, Bree Morgan and Jory Pettit each had two wins to lead the Bruins.

    A trio of Lancaster Bruins basketball standouts will participate in the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association top 100 event to be held Saturday at Keenan High School in Columbia.

  • McGuinness, Beavers lead Lancers in 7-2 win

    The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers soccer team rolled to a 7-2 road win over the Oxford (Ga.) College Lady Eagles on Saturday.

    The Lancers came out strong in the first half, scoring the first three goals. With less than five minutes remaining, the Eagles finally found the net ending the half with a 3-1 USCL lead.
