    During the post-Christmas wrap-up of sales during the 2011 shopping season, several news organizations reported an unexpected finding – guns were among the best-selling Christmas items nationwide.
    The reports, based on federal background checks through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), showed there were a record 1,534,414 inquiries by gun retailers in December for people buying guns.

    Andrew Jackson High School seniors Wendy Winn and Sydney Phillips were worried last Tuesday when their teachers pulled them out of class and sent them to the principal’s office.
    Never mind that neither of them had ever been in trouble before, or the fact that they’re among the top students in their class – Wendy and Sydney somehow thought they were toast.

  • Cyclists to ride 200 miles to fight multiple sclerosis

    On Sept. 22-23,  more than 1,500 cyclists from across the Carolinas will pedal from the greater Charlotte and Columbia areas to Sunset Beach, N.C., to raise money and awareness for the National MS Society.

  • Details emerge in Pardue shooting

    More details have emerged about a shooting along Pardue Street earlier this week, though officers are still looking for their suspect.
    Lancaster Police Capt. Scott Grant said officers continue to follow leads as they search for Shibre Ikee Truesdale, 20, who is wanted by the police department on charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
    “No, he has not been arrested yet,” Grant said. “We are actually out looking for him right now.”

  • Woman injured in industrial accident

    GREAT FALLS – A local woman was seriously injured in an accident on her job Monday.
    Ashley Whittle, 24, was hurt when her hair became tangled in a machine at Morcon Inc.
    Great Falls Interim Fire Chief David Galloway said a member of the fire department responded to Morcon Inc. on James Baker Boulevard about 8:30 a.m.

  • DJJ adopts local classes

    The S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) has made progress in recent years establishing programs aimed at reducing juvenile delinquency and recidivism.
    DJJ’s goal is to intervene in young people’s lives before they engage in delinquent behavior and in turn become involved in the juvenile court system.
    One such program the agency offers to elementary and middle school students in Chester, Fairfield, and Lancaster counties is PROJECT: Adopt-A-Class (PAAC).

    INDIAN LAND – Lee Central, in a Region IV-AA doubleheader sweep of Indian Land, used key runs to net a pair of league wins over the Warriors on Friday night at the IL gym.

    The Lady Warriors, in their best effort of the season in league play, battled Lee Central before falling, 48-45.
