  • Warriors whip Wolverines, face Shamrocks

    Home’s been nothing but net – hardwood  success – for the Indian Land Warriors this season.

    The Warriors hope to keep it going one more time this season as they host Eau Claire in the third-round of the Class AA Upper State basketball playoffs Wednesday night at 7.

    A third straight postseason home victory will move the Warriors to a coveted bid to play for the Class AA Upper State playoffs on Saturday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.

    It’s  4 p.m. on a Friday. South York Street is nearly empty. A few people walking and a handful of cars at a poolroom.   About the only traffic is a few cars headed north toward town or south to make connections at busy intersections.

    It’s always been South York Street, but not so very long ago, nearly everyone living here had a different name for a short strip of it: “Midway.” 

  • Fires scorch county

    Dry conditions mixed with high wind have posed a great challenge for local fire officials over the last several days.
    Lancaster County Fire Marshal Stephen Blackwelder said county firefighters have responded to more than 30 grass fires since Saturday.
    One of the biggest was on Monday afternoon, when a brush fire threatened at least 10 homes in the eastern part of Lancaster County near the Chesterfield County line.

  • County bans all burning

    The rash of recent brush fires has forced local fire officials to restrict all outdoor burning in the county.
    The Lancaster County Fire Service issued a burning ban late Tuesday morning. The ban will remain in effect “until conditions improve,” said County Fire Marshal Stephen Blackwelder.
    This ban, which includes recreational burning, has been issued as a result of continued dry ground conditions, low relative humidity and high winds, according to a fire service press release.  

  • Man shot, killed after argument

    Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies believe an argument may have led to the shooting death of a Heath Springs man Saturday night.
    Ernest Lee Cunningham, 55, of 2269 Thornwell Road, Heath Springs, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds after deputies responded to a shooting at 923 Louisa St., according to a sheriff’s office press release. He was found at 11:13 p.m. Saturday.

  • Residents file FOIA request over landfill

    A grass-roots residents group has requested a number of county documents in its search for answers about a proposed landfill process.
    In a letter hand-delivered to the office of Lancaster County Administrator Steve Willis last week, members of the Lancaster County Action Council filed a Freedom of Information Act request.

  • Councils hammer out plans for airport industrial park

    In an effort to attract businesses to the county and put more residents back to work, several city and county officials met Thursday night to discuss plans for an airport industrial park.
    Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. President Keith Tunnell presented tentative plans for the park at a meeting in Lancaster City Council chambers.

  • Gregory wins GOP primary

    Former state Sen. Greg Gregory won the Republican nomination for the state District 16 seat in a special election Tuesday night.
    Gregory, one of five candidates running for the Republication nomination hoping to fill the seat vacated by U.S. Congressman Mick Mulvaney, won with a total of 3,470 votes, or 56.7 percent of the total votes cast in York and Lancaster counties. Gregory received a total of 2,839 votes in Lancaster County.

    Bruins shoot       to stay alive

    Lancaster ventured to Dorman High School in Spartanburg on Tuesday night for a third-round game with the Cavaliers. The Lancaster vs. Dorman winner advances to the Class AAAA Upper State title game on Friday night at 8:30 to meet the winner of the Irmo vs. Westside game at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.
