  • Officials keep close eye on winter storm

    Local officials are keeping a close eye on the movements of a winter storm heading toward the state.

    Lancaster County is under a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. tonight to 11 a.m. Thursday.

    Wintry precipitation is forecast to develop across the region by late tonight, according to the National Weather Service. Light snow will develop and mix with sleet and rain. There may be a period of light snow after midnight. The weather service said light accumulation is possible, but will be less than an inch.

  • BHS team wins calculus coaster contest

    A roller coaster ride in Ohio was the inspiration behind a winning calculus project.

    Buford High School seniors T.J. Roberts and Taylor Threatt created a roller coaster display called TNT, which was voted the best of all displays presented by calculus students in Lancaster County School District.

  • County official says land was rezoned for Rite Aid

    A Charlotte developer got the initial OK at County Council's last meeting to move forward with The Village at Doby's Bridge.

    The proposed development, on U.S. 521 across from the intersection of Doby's Bridge Road, will include retail and office space.

    With counsel from my family, close confidants and top staff, I have decided not to seek re-election and will retire at the expiration of my current term in January, 2009.

    This was an extremely difficult decision for me because I love law enforcement, the good people of Lancaster County and most of all the men and women I have had the privilege and honor of working with throughout my 30-plus year career.

  • Be aware of new tax laws before you file

    Uncle Sam and the state of South Carolina are knocking at the doors of Lancaster County residents again, looking for their share of taxes from 2007.

    And of course, there are always new things to be aware of in a new tax season.

    Each year, the federal government changes various standard and itemized deduction amounts because of inflationary reasons. New deductions are also added.

  • Lady Rams hand IL first league loss

    Chesterfield handed the Indian Land girls their first Conference III-AA basketball loss, edging the Lady Warriors 54-50 on Tuesday night in the opener.

    Chesterfield took a 37-30 lead into the final period and was able to hold on against the scrappy Lady Warriors, who dipped to 5-6, 2-1.

    In the nightcap, the CHS boys posted a 54-41 win.

    Indian Land was down by as many as 10 in the final period, but the Lady Warriors battled back.

    Shelby McConnell, who scored 10 points, netted a bucket with 2:20 to play to close the gap to 48-46.

  • First day at new ILMS like second Christmas

    INDIAN LAND – There were sticky notes on the lockers that told each student which one was theirs.

    Even though some had trouble mastering their combinations, they were glad that the lockers were considerably larger than the ones they had been using at their former school.

    Tuesday was the first day of class for Indian Land Middle School students in the recently renovated building that used to serve as the high school.

    Aside from having new lockers, the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders appeared happy to have a building to call their own.
