  • A conservation easement has been donated by Stoneboro Plantation LLC in the Stoneboro area of southern Lancaster County and northern Kershaw County to the Katawba Valley Land Trust.

    The easement totals 564 acres, of which 509 are in Kershaw County.

    The property encompasses the headwaters of Little Beaver Creek, which flows into Beaver Creek and empties into the northern tip of Lake Wateree.

    The upland forests are open and park-like due to the prescribed fire management strategy. The open spaces are full of native grasses and shrubs.

  • Robinson county’s Employee of Quarter

    Lisa Robinson suspected something was up when her coworkers recently took her picture. But she had no idea it would lead her to win as Lancaster County’s Employee of the Quarter award.

    Robinson, director of human resources for the county, was recently nominated by her coworkers for the honor, but they needed her picture for the ballot. She found out soon after that she had won.

    “I was very honored and very surprised,” Robinson said.

  • Mama's fed up with Blue Mondays

    I guess it was a Monday when the lady of the cave decided it was time to wash out the family hides.

    Years ago, it was called “Blue Monday,” not because washing clothes without a washing machine was depressing, but because of a bluing agent used in the rising water.

    Blue Monday still lingers in some households, but the advent of modern washers and dryers has made every day a potential wash day.

    Well, it wasn’t always that way.

    When I was a small boy, Mama didn’t have a washing machine, not even the old wringer kind.

  • Teens face charges after shots fired at vacant Lancaster house

    A call about someone inside a vacant home and shots fired on Central Avenue on Wednesday led to the arrests of several people, including six juveniles.

    According to Lancaster Police Department incident reports, officers arrived at 512 Central Ave. and saw Torey Robert Blackwell, 17, of 1262 Belmont Circle, standing in the front yard.

    When officers turned into the driveway, the report said Blackwell went toward the back of the home, throwing marijuana on the ground.

  • Mule team to plow community garden

    Locals will get the chance to see how plowing was done in the old days with the opening of the Lancaster County Community Garden on Saturday.

    From 10 a.m. to noon, mule teams and draft horses will plow plots near the Springdale Recreation Center, 260 S. Plantation Road, beside the soccer fields off Woodland Drive. Free horse and mule wagon rides will also be part of the fun.

    The plots will be used for the community garden, which is being spearheaded by the United Way of Lancaster County.

  • Police reports - May 3, 2009

    According to Lancaster Police Department reports:

    - Someone took a Maytag air conditioner and heater and a GE refrigerator from an East Dunlap Street home between 5 p.m. April 25 and 8:30 a.m. April 27.

    The air unit was taken from a kitchen window. The refrigerator had been taken from a back bedroom while the kitchen in the rental home was being remodeled. The appliances are valued at $1,200.

    There were no signs of forced entry at the home. The thief may have gotten into the home through a crawl pace, according to the report.

  • Buford tops IL in play-off

    Buford defeated county rival Indian Land for the second time in four days to wrap up a third-place finish in Conference III-A Monday at Andrew Jackson High School.

    The one-game play-off game was needed after Buford and Indian Land were tied at the end of regular-season conference play. BHS took a 4-3 win.

    Buford downed Indian Land 4-2 on Lady Jackets’ Senior Day on Friday. Indian Land then fell to regular-season runner-up Chesterfield in its final regular-season game on Saturday.

  • STAR chapter steps up to help HOPE

    Right now, any help that HOPE of Lancaster gets is a blessing, said director Elaine Adkins.

    “The first six days of January, we saw 197 people,” Adkins said. “The numbers only continue to climb. Right now, there are lots of folks out there who need help and many of them never thought they’d have to.”

    And just in time, another group is stepping into the gap to help HOPE.

    The STAR (Star Touring and Riding Association) Lancaster Chapter 396 will  host its third annual Feed the Children Trivia Ride on Saturday.

  • Blackmon nabs first young guns victory

    Young guns driver Brandon Blackmon now knows the winning feeling.

    His eager fans had to wait through massive delays, such as watering the track after heat races, a kids activity and seven other main events. Brandon led flag-to-flag, en route to the win Saturday night at Lancaster Motor Speedway. He was given an inaugural winner’s mud bath. His fans and crew got him good. Congrats to Brandon on this memorable win. Andrew Yandle was second, Andrew Blackwood was third, with Josh Langley fourth and Nathan Geist fifth.

  • Jackets earn bid with win over IL

    The Buford Yellow Jackets notched a 4-2 win over Indian Land to secure a Class A Upper State postseason bid on Friday night at IL’s Reservation.

    Colt Ellis, who worked 5.2 innings, earned the win with a five-hitter. Ellis fanned four and allowed a walk and hit a batter. Ricky Lewis, who went 1.1 innings, earned the save, yielding a hit, no runs and no walks.

    Donald Kirkley led the Jackets’ offense with a single, double and scored a run. Joseph Wright drilled two hits, scored a run and drove in a run.
