  • Two face charges in drive-by shooting

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting on French Street last week, and police are looking for two more suspects.

    Naquvis Benson, 21, was shot about 2 p.m. Jan. 23 outside the French Street duplex where he lives, according to police.

    Davatee Tymar Clinton, 20, of 722 E. Arch St., was arrested Monday by the Lancaster Police Department and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of a pistol during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a pistol under age 21.

  • 4-H plans Farm Fun on Saturday

    You'll get a chance to pat a bunny, milk a cow or adopt a pet at a Lancaster County 4-H event on Saturday.

    You can even bring your horse.

    Lancaster County 4-H is holding Farm Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at ACE Hardware and Garden Center, 714 S. Market St.

    A Southern States equine specialist will be offering free consultations for anyone who brings their horse. The horse can be weighed and receive a body condition score. An equine nutrition seminar is also scheduled.

  • Warning: Marlboro man beware

    It is only fair to inform the trashy folks who drop their butts and bottles on Ussery Road that this is perilous action.

    The Marlboro Man could be fined $465 plus eight hours of community service, or if he's affluent, he may choose the $542 fine with no community service.

    And the Bud Lite and Diet Pepsi person could face the same fate if caught. What's worse, depending on the weight of litter dropped along the road, the trashy person may have to cough up a maximum of $1,050 in fines and risk having his or her vehicle seized.

    It's the law.

  • South Carolina voters say they want change in White House

    The news media continues in its quest to make the presidential primaries a racist contest. Granted, a bunch of Americans voted for Sen. Barack Obama because they feel comfortable with someone of their own skin color.

    Many years ago, all radios in black neighborhoods were tuned to Madison Square Garden where Joe Louis battled a white opponent for boxing world's championship.

    Forgotten, was the support of white fans when Joe took on Max Schmelling, a white man, but also a German citizen. Seems it was a case in favor of an American over a foreigner.

  • Sun City resident Bruce Miller wants House District 45 seat

    INDIAN LAND - A Sun City Carolina Lakes resident is the first candidate to announce his intention to run for the S.C. House District 45 seat.

    First-term incumbent Rep. Mick Mulvaney said recently that he would be running for the state Senate District 16 seat, rather than for a second term in the House.

    Veteran state Sen. Greg Gregory, a Republican, is not running for re-election.

    Bruce Miller, 65, said he's been fascinated by polictics since he was young.

  • Red Devils hold off Warriors

    INDIAN LAND - Indian Land's game effort fell short in a 59-54 home loss to Class A power Great Falls on Tuesday night.

    Great Falls' five-point win gave the Red Devils a hoops sweep.

    The IL girls dropped a 43-21 setback in the opener.

    The Indian Land boys showed it came to play, taking an 11-8 lead in the first period. Great Falls came back to take a tough 22-17 lead at the half and was able to keep the upper hand despite the inspired Warriors' play.

  • New IL school positive improvement

    We can imagine how exciting it was for Indian Land Middle School students when they moved into their own school earlier this month. Principal David McDonald said move-in day was like like Christmas for the students.

    The new middle school in Indian Land is the old high school building. Its day as a high school ended last spring and Indian Land's bigger, better high school opened in the fall. The old high school under went extensive renovations to make it the new Indian Land Middle School.

  • County OKs heelsplitter measure

    County Council passed a resolution Monday night that will allow development to continue in an area inhabited by an endangered mussel.

    Council passed the resolution, which was hotly debated at its Jan. 7 meeting, in a 6-1 vote, with Councilman Jack Estridge dissenting. The resolution allows water and sewer line construction and other development to continue in the Six Mile Creek basin in Indian Land, where the Carolina heelsplitter has been found.

  • Video Exclusive: Take a virutal tour - IL surgery center ready to open

    INDIAN LAND - Some of the high-tech equipment is still in giant pieces of plastic and bubble wrap, but it won't be long before it's being used during surgery at Indian Land's newest medical facility.

    Employees were slated to start moving more equipment into Springs Memorial Hospital's The Surgery Center at Edgewater last week, said the center's administrator, Rob Bashore.

    It will likely be at least another three weeks before the first surgery is done, as the last few permits are obtained and approved.

  • Teen dies in wreck

    INDIAN LAND - The Indian Land High School family is mourning the death of one of their own.

    Derek Hammaker, a senior at the school, died Sunday night in a two-vehicle accident in York County.

    Hammaker, 18, was driving east on S.C. 160 in a 1994 Honda sedan when he collided head-on about 10:45 p.m. with a 2007 Toyota Tacoma, said Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

    Hammaker was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died from injuries he suffered in the crash.
