  • Primary prestige not worth the cost

    We want to weigh in on the Presidential Preference Primaries in South Carolina. We could talk about how holding these primaries put us on the national stage, perhaps again helped the Republican Party pick its nominee, helped clarify the Democratic field, perhaps picked a president.

    We could talk about how fun it was for all those other towns to have candidates pass through, how cool it was to see three, four major debates held here.

  • Firm to build business park in Indian Land

    INDIAN LAND - A top development firm is making its second foray into Lancaster County.

    The Keith Corp. has bought 38 acres on Old Bailes Road off S.C. 160 to build Sterling Oaks Business Park.

    The Keith Corp. has proposed building 350,000 square feet of office space in five buildings, with each building measuring 50,000 to 75,000 square feet.

    "They're highly successful in developing corporate office parks," said Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. President Keith Tunnell.

  • County wants second opinion on value of park

    INDIAN LAND - County Council wants a second opinion on the worth of a 9-acre park in Indian Land.

    The Lancaster County Joint Recreation Commission and the county Parks and Recreation Department have proposed selling Roy Hardin Park on Collins Road in Indian Land for $1 million. A developer is interested in building a commercial development there and wants to use the park area for storm drainage.

    Residents oppose sale of park

    Council member Bryan Vaughn, who represents Indian Land, and some Indian Land residents are against the sale.

  • Woman appreciates store clerk's kindness

    I went to Food Lion on Main Street recently and was shopping very carefully because I only had little money to spend.

    I have been out of work for several weeks now. It has been a tough time, but each day I see God's blessing and hand in my situation.

    As I went through the aisle I made sure I bought items that were on sale or were buy one, get one free. By doing so I was able to save $12 on a $31 purchase.

    When I went to check out there was a vase of six beautiful pink roses at the end of the checkout counter.

  • Man not seriously hurt after being hit by truck

    A pedestrian was treated and released from a Charlotte hospital after being hit by a vehicle on Grace Avenue on Wednesday evening.

    Lancaster resident Francis Faile Sr., 83, was driving north on Grace Avenue in a 2005 Toyota pickup and struck Timothy Doster as Doster crossed in front of the vehicle's path, said Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

    The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. near the Memorial Park Road intersection.

    Doster, 42, of 1704 Parkman Ave., landed in the parking lot of The Forks gas station, Gaskin said.

  • Bruins drop two at Rock Hill High

    Lancaster High had a rocky night on the hardwood in Region III-AAAA hoops play at Rock Hill on Tuesday.

    The Lancaster girls dropped a 58-52 loss in the opener. In the nightcap, LHS lost to RHHS, 68-49.

    The Lady Bruins led for most of the game, but Rock Hill rallied down the stretch to take the six-point win.

    Lancaster held a 24-21 lead at the break and took a 38-35 spread into the final eight minutes.

    The Lady Bearcats, who had three players in double figures, rallied in the final period when they outscored the LHS girls 23-14.

  • Buford hosts Keenan in wrestling playoffs

    Buford launches its Class AA Lower State postseason wrestling hopes tonight when the Jackets meet Keenan High of Columbia at 6.BHS, 11-8, is seeded seventh in the field, while Keenan is seeded 10th. The winner advances to the second round Saturday when it travels to second-seeded Cheraw.Loris is the Lower State’s top seed. CHS received a first-round bye. Indian Land launches its Class A state title hopes Saturday when the Warriors host the Class A Upper State duals. The Upstate winner advances to Ridge View High School on Feb.

  • Gangs focus of tri-county conference

    Gang involvement will be the focus of a two-day event intended to unite and motivate youth this weekend.

    Beat the Streets is a two-day conference that will address gang issues in Lancaster, Chester and York counties. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Friday and Saturday at the Baxter Hood Center on the campus of York Technical College in Rock Hill.

    The conference is sponsored by YouthNet, an arm of the S.C. Department of Mental Health that provides various services to children and their families in the tri-county area.

  • Two face charges in drive-by shooting

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting on French Street last week, and police are looking for two more suspects.

    Naquvis Benson, 21, was shot about 2 p.m. Jan. 23 outside the French Street duplex where he lives, according to police.

    Davatee Tymar Clinton, 20, of 722 E. Arch St., was arrested Monday by the Lancaster Police Department and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of a pistol during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a pistol under age 21.
