  • Neal keys AJ over Buford

    Andrew Jackson took a key step in its quest for the Region IV-AA baseball title, posting an 8-4 win over region and county rival Buford High School at Buford Park on Friday night.
    AJ pitcher Chandler Neal sparked the Volunteers, who improved to 5-1 in region play, with a stellar effort on the mound and at the plate.
    Neal went the distance, allowing four runs – two earned runs and struck out six Jackets. He also allowed two walks and six hits.

  • Lancers sign Vols’ soccer ace Neal

    KERSHAW – Friday afternoon Andrew Jackson High senior soccer player Brandon Neal had a reason to smile, but it wasn’t anything about the end of school and the start of spring break.
    Neal beamed at the thought of his future, continuing his education and playing college soccer.
    Neal will be a member of the first University of South Carolina Lancaster soccer team after signing with the Lancers in the AJ media center.

  • AJ’s Clements signs with USCL soccer

    KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson High School senior soccer player Denton Clements said Friday afternoon was a dream come true.
    “I never thought I would be playing college soccer, so it’s a dream come true,” said Clements, a four-year soccer player for the Volunteers.
    Clements’ soccer future will be at the University of South Carolina Lancaster where the Lancers will field their first men’s soccer team this fall.

  • Third suspect jailed in Jones murder

    A third man was arrested Friday in the January murder of 23-year-old Jenika Jones, only three weeks after two other men were charged.
    Al Martinez Green, 19, 813 1/2 East Dunlap St., was tracked down Friday by Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies and charged with murder, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

  • Officials tour Brooklyn neigbhorhood

    With a quick right turn off Lancaster’s Main Street, the small white car suddenly entered a different world.
    Leaving behind the clean streets and tidy, brick buildings that dot the town’s main thoroughfare, the landscape abruptly changes to broken sidewalks, overgrown yards, scattered trash and abandoned buildings.
    The car passes a large, gleaming brown sign heralding the group’s arrival at the Historic Brooklyn Neighborhood.

    The state of legislative affairs both on the state and federal level were the topic of conversation Friday, March 30, during the 2012 Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Breakfast.
    Participating in this year’s event was U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, along with state Sens. Vincent Sheheen and Greg Gregory, state Rep. Deborah Long and South Carolina Chamber of Commerce President Otis Rawl.

  • Tunnell: AkzoNobel will exceed its commitment to the county

    Calls to The Lancaster News on Thursday morning about layoffs at AkzoNobel Coatings Inc. were not confirmed by the local company Thursday afternoon.
    Dianne Thompson, human resource manager for AkzoNobel in Lancaster, said she had no comment.
    “I am not at liberty to discuss our corporate's internal business,” Thompson said.
    The headquarters of AkzoNobel, a paint and film plastics specialty company that produces coatings used in automobiles, marine products, furniture and architectural signs, is at 1872 S.C. 9 Bypass West.

  • Meeting Street land may be site for convienience store

    The availability of beer and wine was debated during the consideration of a property rezoning at the Tuesday, March 27, City Council meeting.
    Council voted 5-1 to pass final reading to rezone land at 1040 W. Meeting St. from MHP (manufactured home park) to B-2 (neighborhood commercial).
    The property, which has been used commercially in the past, is now vacant and is being proposed for use as a convenience store.

  • City Council approves change order for Brooklyn sewer work

    A few thousand dollars are being saved in the continued efforts to revitalize the Brooklyn Avenue area.
    At its Tuesday, March 27 meeting, City Council unanimously approved a change order pertaining to the sewer rehabilitation for phase II of that area’s revitalization efforts.
    The change decreases the amount of money spent after two sewer line segments were removed from the project, said City Administrator Helen Sowell.
