  • Church baptizes woman at 104

    Recently members and guests of Flint Ridge Baptist Church witnessed something that no one ever has before.

    Florence Alexander was among four others who were baptized on Feb. 10.

    What makes Alexander so unique?

    She's 104 years old.

    Pastor Kelvin Hinson of Flint Ridge introduced his brother, Pastor Stacey Hinson of Higher Ground Christian Church, who would be baptizing Alexander.

    Their church "adopted" Alexander after several members visited her before Christmas to see if she had any needs.

  • Harriet Tubman's relative talks to students here

    Students at Discovery School recently got the chance to hear the story of Harriet Tubman from a unique perspective.

    Rashelle Glover, a 13-year-old descendant of Tubman, spoke to students Friday morning, sharing family stories and items she's collected.

    Glover, 13, is Tubman's great-great-great-great grand niece on her father's side. She lives in Auburn, N.Y., where Tubman settled and is buried.

  • Lions' Robinson signs with North Greenville

    RICHBURG - Antwan Robinsons mother, Gloria Gladden, said Thursday was a blessing. The coaches and administration at Lewisville High School said having Antwan around for the last four years was a blessing to them.

    Robinson, a Lions' football standout, signed on Thursday with North Greenville College.

    Robinson received looks from a number of schools and had firm offers from Presbyterian College and Campbell. The Crusaders, though, were offering exactly what he was seeking.

  • Roles reversed as reporter participates in exercise

    While covering a story at Covenant Baptist Church on Feb. 8., the roles were reversed, and I wound up as a source in several other articles.

    Forty middle-schoolers throughout the county were taking notes in their reporter pads and asking questions - all in an effort to write that perfect news story. I happened to be one of the people who was on the receiving end of those inquiries.

    Ten students from four middle schools in the Lancaster County School District participated in a read-in event that day. They had previously volunteered to read a book and met to discuss it.

  • Report of smoke brings fire trucks to The Lancaster News building

    Some Lancaster Fire Department firefighters may have had "worst case scenario" on their minds after they were called to a possible fire at The Lancaster News office on North White Street on Thursday night.

    About 6:30 p.m., a passers-by called dispatchers to report that there was heavy smoke around the newspaper building.

    Some employees inside the building were oblivious to the flashing red lights of the fire trucks outside as firefighters entered the building.

  • LHS girls playoff foe

    A week ago, we had four county high school basketball teams set to make a postseason run.

    Now as far as the 2007-08 prep hoops campaign goes, all we have now are the hardwood memories.

    The quartet included three girls squads AJs Lady Vols, Indian Lands Lady Warriors and the Lancaster High Lady Bruins. The lone boys team was the AJ Vols.

    On Tuesday, the girls trio bowed out in three road defeats.

    The toughest loss was Lancasters 46-42 season-ending setback to Spartanburg High School, the Region II-AAAA champion.

  • Giants earned super victory

    Super Bowl XLII is history, but it will long be remembered as one of the greatest championship games in National Football League history.

    The underdog New York Giants pulled a stunner, knocking off the powerful New England Patriots.

    The Patriots, cruising on an unbeaten streak, were a game away from being the stuff of gridiron legends. A 12-point favorite, New England was on the brink of becoming the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to post an undefeated season in pro football.

  • Don't let dollar signs be top priority

    Editor's note: Pat Eudy wrote this letter to Lancaster County Council members about the proposed sale of Roy Hardin Park.

    You are willing to sell a nine-acre tract (Roy Hardin Park) for $1 million when other land is being sold for $150,000-$200,000 per acre, three miles from that strategic location.

    When are you going to stop doing favors for developers and start doing something for the residents of Indian Land?

  • Let's try single-gender classes

    We think it's time that Lancaster County joins the growing number of school districts in the state that offers single-gender classes to their students.

    About 90 school districts in the state now offer single-gender classes to their students. There are no single-gender classes here, but the school district is exploring the option.

    We're told some schools may begin testing single-gender classes in the fall. A.R. Rucker Middle School, for instance, is looking at making single-gender classes available for sixth-graders next year.

  • Red Cross merger means more resources

    I am excited to share the news that the Lancaster County Chapter of the American Red Cross has merged with the York County Chapter of the American Red Cross to form the Upper Palmetto Chapter.

    This means a greater strength and Red Cross presence for our residents in Lancaster County. By way of this new alliance, the Red Cross is doubling its capacity and resources to better serve the local community in times of need.
