  • Boy, 13, beaten with bat

    A 13-year-old Lancaster boy was hit in the head with a baseball bat when he tried to stop a group of boys from stealing his bicycle Sunday.

    The boy noticed the bike was missing from the front porch of his Pardue Street home about 11 p.m. and went around the back and saw about five boys gathered near it, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.

  • Tire headquarters to roll this way

    INDIAN LAND – Continental Tire North America will wheel its Charlotte headquarters into a new building in Indian Land next year.

    The tire manufacturer will move 300 employees to a 75,000-square-foot building at McMillan Business Park on S.C. 160, an $11 million investment. Contractors have begun clearing land for the building, and construction is expected to be completed in early 2009.

  • Indian Land still needs its very own post office

    Good things continue to happen in the Panhandle area of Lancaster County. Things that will surely make a difference in the lives of citizens in Indian Land.On Jan. 31, Springs Memorial Hospital and the medical partners of the ambulatory surgery center held the grand opening of The Surgery Center at Edgewater. This facility must be called “state of the art” because when you visit it, it becomes apparent that money was no object.

  • Planning for 6,300-acre project in Chester Co. ahead of schedule

    CHESTER – A lengthy approval process for Montrose Plantation is ahead of schedule, according to the developer, and a recent state grant is helping it proceed.

    Montrose Plantation is the 6,300-acre mixed-use project owned by Charlotte real estate investor Mel Graham. The property is located along Interstate 77 in Chester County.

    "The lengthy approval process is going extremely well," Graham said. "We are about midway through the approval process, which we originally expected to take several years to complete. We are ahead of schedule."

  • Paper should not have printed Feb. 8 article

    I am writing about the article “Man being held for having sex with a horse, official says” in the Feb. 8 edition of The Lancaster News.I know this may be newsworthy to some folks, but that was something that could have been left out of the newspaper. The paper could have just put the man’s name and that he was arrested for indecent acts.Children use newspapers to look up events for school projects or discussions. I was around some teens after the article was in the paper and they were laughing and thinking the incident was funny.

  • Help veterans keep rolling as van drivers

    Veterans have stepped up to the plate for our freedom. Now they need us to step up for them. Drivers are needed to take veterans to appointments in Columbia and Rock Hill.Our veterans are in need of our help.The Lancaster County Veterans Affairs office is looking for van drivers to take veterans to their medical appointments. Stops include the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia and the Rock Hill VA Clinic.The van transports veterans to appointments in Columbia Monday through Thursday.

    INDIAN LAND – Comedian Tony Boswell says his dream job would be to host Weekend Update, the popular, long-running skit on "Saturday Night Live."

    "Is that going to happen?" Boswell said, sitting at his kitchen table at his home in BridgeMill. "Probably not. I'm 45."

    But he's having a good time, anyway. He just placed second in the 28th Seattle International Comedy Competition.

    INDIAN LAND - Continental Tire North America is picking up and moving 12 miles from its Charlotte headquarters to a new building in Indian Land next year.

  • Time to change animal abuse laws

    Mr. Jensan Louis, were you amused at your own words and how good they sounded in your column "Anti-cockfighters seek to take away rights" in the Feb. 17 edition of The Lancaster News?

    They may have sounded that way to you, but for some of us your words were like stepping back in time about 200 years or more. To a time when blood sports were the order of the day and there was money to made on the blood and suffering of innocent animals.

    Today I'm glad to say that for the most part civilization has finally come to Lancaster County.
