  • Zoglman wrong about Powers-Norrell political aspirations

    Dave Zoglman is wrong to say that Mrs. Mandy Powers-Norrell threw the first dirt in the S.C. Senate seat 16 race.

    Powers-Norrell's statement that every decision she would make as our state senator would be made out of a love for this district and its people first is not from a desire to move up the political ladder.

    I think it was wonderful and refreshing.

    I also know that presidents Washington, Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan loved their respective hometowns and first made a difference there before moving on to other political aspirations.

  • Wells deserves coaching honor

    Beach trips, no matter the time of year, most often result in fun.

    Buford High School head football coach Mike Wells has a beach business trip planned for next December and he's elated with what's in store.

    Wells, the seven-year head football coach at Buford High School, has been selected as a coach for the annual North-South All-Star football game at Coastal Carolina University.

    Wells will serve as a North assistant for the 61st annual clash.

  • Woman dies after wreck in Kershaw

    KERSHAW – Officials say alcohol may have contributed to a fatal two-vehicle accident over the weekend in the southern part of the county.

    Mary Beth Johnson, who lived in Kershaw, died early Sunday morning after the 1986 Buick station wagon she was riding in collided head-on with a 1999 Honda Accord on S.C. 341.

    The accident happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday about 2 miles south of Kershaw.

    Johnson, 43, a front-seat passenger in the Buick, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She died shortly before 1 a.m. from blunt force head, abdominal and

    Buford High School sophomore Rashad Cunningham had the top finish among the three county wrestlers who competed in the individual state championship matches on Saturday.Cunningham, in the 119-pound class, placed fourth.

  • Hospice selling purple bows in memory, honor of cancer patients

    Purple bows in memory or honor of cancer patients will soon be appearing on businesses and homes across Lancaster County. 

    Hospice Care of South Carolina’s local Relay for Life team is selling the bows to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

    The Relay for Life team hopes every Lancaster County resident touched by cancer will be able to feel the support of the community when they see purple

    bows on mailboxes, doors and lampposts across the county.

  • Riverside Road rezoning issue on County Council's agenda

    County Council will vote on second reading to approve rezoning heavy industrial property to residential at Monday night's meeting.

    Council approved first reading of the rezoning at its last meeting. Some council members believe that the county needs for the property to remain industrial to attract new manufacturing jobs to the county, while others believe that a new residential development will bring new life to the northern part of Riverside Road.

  • Volunteers collect tons of trash here

    Lancaster County's Adopt-A-Highway volunteers made a major impact in the beautification of their communities when they removed 21,030 pounds of trash from their adopted roadsides last year.

    The S.C. Department of Transportation reports that 392 volunteers in Lancaster County picked up litter from along 62 miles of highway in 2007.

    Statewide, more than 29,000 Adopt-A-Highway volunteers picked up 1.4 million pounds of trash from more than 6,000 miles of adopted highways.

    A year ago, the Buford High baseball team finished as the Region VIII-AA runner-up.Jackets’ coach Joe Wright said his team can again be in the thick of the battle this spring.“We have a good group of players back this season,” Wright said. “Defensively, we have a sound team and our hitting will come around with some of our younger players gaining experience.
