  • Some new hires to get signing bonus

    The Lancaster County School District will continue to offer a signing bonuses that officials hope will attract quality teachers.

    The school board on Tuesday night unanimously approved a $1,500 signing bonus for new-hire teachers for the 2008-09 school year. The supplement is for those who teach English, math, science or special education.

    "A signing bonus is something that is appropriate," board member Peter Barry said. "This can allow us to be competitive with districts where the revenue is greater."

  • Take care of vulnerable in society

    The message was scribbled on a paper plate.

    "Feed me. This is the only meal I get. I can't afford groceries."

    It was just one of many paper plates sent to S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford.

    The paper plate messages were part of a statewide campaign to bring attention to Sanford's proposed $2.9 million budget cut for the Meals on Wheels program, which now feeds more than 20,000 people across the state.

  • Saints halt Devils' postseason run

    The Great Falls basketball teams’ seasons ended on a sour note, a game shy of coveted Class A Upper State title tilts at Clemson on Saturday.Calhoun County rolled to a 69-49 win over the Great Falls boys on Wednesday night at Richland Northeast High School.The Saints’ 20-point win sends them to the Class A Upstate championship game for the third straight season.

  • Bruins face diamond challenge

    Over the past two springs, the Lancaster High School baseball team has won 33 games, including 18 victories last season.

    With the loss of 11 solid seniors, the Bruins will face a challenge in seeking to continue their diamond success.

    "A year ago at this time, we had our share of veterans," said LHS coach Steve Williams, who is 184-176 since becoming the Bruins' baseball coach in 1993. "This year, we're going to look to our seniors to give us solid leadership."

  • Pope presented Celebration of Life through Sports Award

    Former Indian Land High School head football coach and athletic director Mike Pope was recently presented the Celebration of Life Through Sports Award from The Sporting News.In The Celebration of Life Through Sports Award, athletics is a way to bring friends, families, and communities together.Three years ago, in a move to save his life, Pope had his legs amputated below the knees. His body was ravaged by diabetes and staph infections.

  • Miss South Carolina pays visit to students

    The students were mesmerized by Crystal Garrett's beauty, but it was her words that will probably have the greatest impact.

    Garrett, the reigning Miss South Carolina, told students at Clinton Elementary School on Wednesday how people didn't think she would have a chance to make it this far.

    A Columbia native, Garrett was diagnosed with allergy-induced asthma when she was 3. Doctors didn't expect her to live to see 21.

    Mama's words stung.

    "Just because you went to the show and watched another old scary movie, don't think you can jump into our bed in the middle of the night." 

    I understood the message loud and clear as I crawled back into my own bed after having watched a Wolfman movie at the Midway picture show earlier that day.

  • Writer proud of legislators for protecting animal rights

    After reading the article regarding animal fighting in the Feb. 17 issue, it made me even more grateful and proud of our legislators for the great things they are doing to move our state forward. Especially by protecting those who can’t help themselves. Has anyone ever pictured themselves in the animal’s place, especially a dog? How they would love to have a good home with someone to love and care for them. But they have no choice. The “good old country boys” as described, have control, and the animal has no rights. What are the heart and soul and feelings?

  • Bruce helped start area law enforcement network

    RICHBURG – Friends and associates of former Chester County Councilman Jim Bruce are devastated after his death early Wednesday morning.

    Bruce died early Wednesday morning of cancer. He was 69.

    Bruce was a county councilman from 2003 to 2006.

    "He was a great person," said his wife, Carol. "We were married 43 years. We had our ups and downs like everybody."

    Bruce was civic-minded, she said. It was often his top priority.

    "That came first," she said.

  • Boy, 13, beaten with bat

    A 13-year-old Lancaster boy was hit in the head with a baseball bat when he tried to stop a group of boys from stealing his bicycle Sunday.

    The boy noticed the bike was missing from the front porch of his Pardue Street home about 11 p.m. and went around the back and saw about five boys gathered near it, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.
