  • Big Thursday money split

    Considering the local economic conditions, members of the Big Thursday Scholarship committee are pleased with the amount of money raised.

    For the past several years, the committee has held a golf tournament in which corporate sponsors pledge money. There were nearly 30 sponsors at the 2007 tournament, which brought in $34,000.

    Money raised provides scholarships for Lancaster County students attending either Clemson University or the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.

  • Kershaw group to meet on park

    KERSHAW - The group working to build a community playground in Kershaw will meet Thursday.

    The steering committee heading the efforts to build the community playground will be called the Kershaw Community Park Council. It has set Thursday as Design Day to kick off the effort to build the park.

  • Waterlogged driveway hinders life at group home

    KERSHAW - The driveway to a home in Kershaw's Charlesboro community looks more like a muddy pond.

    Deep holes in the driveway on Taxahaw Road are filled with water, with some holes at least 7 inches deep. Wooden posts run alongside the driveway, which in some areas is not much wider than 10 feet.

    The house at the end of the driveway is home to five men, clients of Chester/Lancaster County Disabilities and Special Needs (DSN) Board. The home allows them to have some independence, and the men are like a family.

  • LHS honors fall-winter stars

    Lancaster High School hailed star athletes at the Bruins' annual fall-winter sports awards night Thursday in the LHS auditorium.

    Standouts in 11 varsity sports as well as top junior varsity and B-team performers were saluted. Coaches also presented letter plaques and participation certificates.

    Senior quarterback Taniel Massey was named the Bruins' football Offensive MVP, while defensive lineman Tyler Canty earned the Defensive MVP.

    Junior guard Michael Catoe was selected the boys basketball MVP, and senior Miteka Trueheart reaped the girls basketball MVP.

  • Some new hires to get signing bonus

    The Lancaster County School District will continue to offer a signing bonuses that officials hope will attract quality teachers.

    The school board on Tuesday night unanimously approved a $1,500 signing bonus for new-hire teachers for the 2008-09 school year. The supplement is for those who teach English, math, science or special education.

    "A signing bonus is something that is appropriate," board member Peter Barry said. "This can allow us to be competitive with districts where the revenue is greater."

  • Take care of vulnerable in society

    The message was scribbled on a paper plate.

    "Feed me. This is the only meal I get. I can't afford groceries."

    It was just one of many paper plates sent to S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford.

    The paper plate messages were part of a statewide campaign to bring attention to Sanford's proposed $2.9 million budget cut for the Meals on Wheels program, which now feeds more than 20,000 people across the state.

  • Saints halt Devils' postseason run

    The Great Falls basketball teams’ seasons ended on a sour note, a game shy of coveted Class A Upper State title tilts at Clemson on Saturday.Calhoun County rolled to a 69-49 win over the Great Falls boys on Wednesday night at Richland Northeast High School.The Saints’ 20-point win sends them to the Class A Upstate championship game for the third straight season.

  • Bruins face diamond challenge

    Over the past two springs, the Lancaster High School baseball team has won 33 games, including 18 victories last season.

    With the loss of 11 solid seniors, the Bruins will face a challenge in seeking to continue their diamond success.

    "A year ago at this time, we had our share of veterans," said LHS coach Steve Williams, who is 184-176 since becoming the Bruins' baseball coach in 1993. "This year, we're going to look to our seniors to give us solid leadership."

  • Pope presented Celebration of Life through Sports Award

    Former Indian Land High School head football coach and athletic director Mike Pope was recently presented the Celebration of Life Through Sports Award from The Sporting News.In The Celebration of Life Through Sports Award, athletics is a way to bring friends, families, and communities together.Three years ago, in a move to save his life, Pope had his legs amputated below the knees. His body was ravaged by diabetes and staph infections.

  • Miss South Carolina pays visit to students

    The students were mesmerized by Crystal Garrett's beauty, but it was her words that will probably have the greatest impact.

    Garrett, the reigning Miss South Carolina, told students at Clinton Elementary School on Wednesday how people didn't think she would have a chance to make it this far.

    A Columbia native, Garrett was diagnosed with allergy-induced asthma when she was 3. Doctors didn't expect her to live to see 21.
