  • Man charged in shooting death

    The Lancaster Police Department has arrested a man in the city’s first murder of 2008.

    Bildrick Lamont Green, 24, of Harris Street, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Derrick Damond Davis, 21, of 806 Pardue St.

    Davis died after suffering two gunshot wounds – one to the chest and one to the right arm, at Pardue Street Apartments early Monday morning. Green was charged less than 24 hours after the shooting.

  • Evelyn and Jones Faulkenberry still attentive to each other's needs

    Not many couples celebrate their 70th anniversary.

    But Jones and Evelyn Faulkenberry of Elgin, 89, and 86, respectively, have defied the odds. They seemed happy Saturday as they basked in the adulation of friends and three generations of family, who joined them at their daughter Dixie Robert’s home on Old Camden Road to celebrate their seven decades of marriage.

    Adults talked and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and children ran through the large front yard. The couple has five children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

  • Applebee's manager is tops

    The employees of Applebee’s restaurant in Lancaster have much to celebrate after winning several awards at an annual company-wide contest.

    Out of the 33 restaurants in its South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia district, the restaurant was named the best of 2007 and its general manager, Tereasa Richardson, won the Best General Manager of the Year award. The restaurant also bested other restaurants in no employee accidents, best employee surveys and over $2 million in sales.

    The awards were given at the Apple-J’s annual banquet in Greenville in February.

  • Meadows to play in Friendship Games

    Cameron Meadows, a fifth-grade student at North Elementary School, has been selected to participate in the People to People Ambassadors Program in Austria this summer.

    Meadows, who will play basketball in the Friendship Games, was selected following a recent interview.

    In addition to the basketball, Meadows will visit several World War II sites and learn about Austria’s culture.

    The People to People Sports Ambassadors Program was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.

  • Time to renovate library?

    It’s easy to see that the main branch of the Lancaster County Library is running out of space.

    Cubicles are crammed into office space. Records are stacked in boxes up to the ceiling. Power poles for the computers break up the public area of the library.

    “We need to upgrade our system so we don’t have to have poles everywhere,” said assistant library director Nancy Berry.

  • Bruins claw Bearcats

    Lancaster High School baseball Senior Night was special, capped by a solid 6-3 win over Region III-AAAA foe Rock Hill High School.

    The three-run LHS win marked the final home game for retiring LHS baseball coach Steve Williams, who was honored prior to the start.

    “It really was a special, special night,” said Williams. “We came out and played well. Nick gave us a quality effort on the mound.”

  • Proud day for Solesbee, 2 programs

    The day – the final Saturday in an out-like-a-lion March – was windy, cold and gray. But for Lancaster Dixie Softball, it was a beaut. Call it Lancaster Dixie Softball's brightest moment on the diamond. March 29, 2008, was a red-letter day for the programs as late director Chuck Solesbee, along with Lancaster Dixie Softball and the Lancaster Southern Belles/ Debs programs were inducted into the Dixie Softball Inc., Hall of Fame.

    The occasion highlighted opening day ceremonies for the 2008 Lancaster Dixie Softball season at Springdale Park.

  • Man dies from gunshot wounds at Pardue Apartments

    The city of Lancaster had its first murder of 2008 early Monday morning.

    Derrick Damond Davis, 21, 806 Pardue St., died this morning after suffering two gunshot wounds, one to the chest and one to the right arm, at Pardue Street Apartments, a government-subsidized apartment complex.

    Davis was pronounced dead at Springs Memorial Hospital at 4:16 a.m., about an hour after the estimated time of the shooting. It is not known if the shooting took place inside or outside of the apartment.

  • Battle brewing over cancer center

    There appears to be a battle on the horizon between companies that want to build a cancer radiation treatment center in Lancaster.

    South Carolina Oncology Services, owned by 21st Century Oncology of Fort Myers, Fla., and the Lancaster Radiation Therapy Center, owned by Piedmont Medical Center of Rock Hill and Carolinas HealthCare System of Charlotte, applied for a certificate of need from the state.

    South Carolina Oncology Services applied for the certificate on May 15, 2007, and the Lancaster Radiation Therapy Center applied for the certificate on Aug. 9, 2007.
