  • Training important for both dogs, people

    It’s something that should never happen – a child being attacked by a dog.

    But it does happen. According to the Centers for Disease Control, dogs bite 4.7 million people a year. Sometimes it’s unprovoked. Witnesses have said the attacks by pit bulls on two 10-year-old boys in Lancaster recently were unprovoked.

  • Martial arts tournament crowns host of champions

    The 34th annual Universal Martial Arts Championships featured a full day of activities at the Springdale Recreation Complex on March 8.

    The tournament drew competitors from six states and two countries – Canada and Trinidad.

    The event opened with breaking competition and closed with the adult black belt kata and fighting.

    Shihan Richard Brown of San Antonio won the black belt kata grand championship, defeating nine other division champions.

  • Lady Bruins booters top Cats

    The Lancaster High School girls improved to 3-2-1 after posting a 2-1 home soccer win over Rock Hill on Friday night.Cady Creighton and Sidney Teague each tallied a goal to boost the LHS win.Tesha Tipton had five saves at the net for the Lady Bruins.In the jayvee match, Rock Hill won 2-0.The Lady Bruins host Fort Mill on Tuesday.The LHS varsity and junior varsity matches with York rained out at home March 7 have been reset for April 21.

  • Adopt A Leader program receives state award

    Tyrique Benson considers the Adopt A Leader house a second school as well as a home away from home.

    The Erwin Elementary School fourth-grader goes to the house nearly every day after school for mentoring and extra help with his homework. He would come every day if he could.

    “It’s like a family,” he said. “When I come here, I feel welcomed.”

    Benson is one of 60 area students who participate in Adopt A Leader, which was recently recognized by a statewide group for its work with youth in the local community.

  • Students celebrate Andrew Jackson's birthday

    KERSHAW – It was a flashback to the 18th century at Andrew Jackson Middle School on Friday.

    There was a colonial joiner who constructed his own bed while a Revolutionary War soldier  demonstrated how to start a fire using flint and steel.

    Goats roamed and a mule was available to plow the land and help plant seeds.

  • Lady Warriors bidding for solid run

    INDIAN LAND – The Indian Land Lady Warriors’ softball team fell just shy of defending its state title for an eighth straight season last spring, but the IL girls have a veteran team and look to make a strong run this season in hopes of returning to the Class A diamond throne.

    The Lady Warriors, 13-16 last season, have nine players returning, including eight starters.

    The IL girls have a solid pitching combination with senior Kimber Coley and Kristin Campbell, a junior who won the team’s Defensive Award last season.

  • H2O is OK, says utility in ad, bills

    The Lancaster County Water and Sewer District water treatment plant violated the amount of a contaminate in the county’s drinking water late last year.

    The district is notifying residents now through advertising and on their monthly bills about a higher than normal level of trihalomethanes found in the county’s drinking water in September, said Mike Bailes, water treatment plant operator.

  • Reading can take you places

    The equation for a good life is to have good literacy skills. Mastering literacy can lead to a good education, good health and a good job which equates to a good life.

    That was the message recently at the J. Marion Sims Literacy Forum. Dr. Linda Gambrell, president of the International Reading Association, was the guest speaker.

    Gambrell, who has authored several books on literacy and is, of course, an avid reader, was touting the benefits of reading.

    As sheriff of Lancaster County, I would like to discuss an issue very close to each of us - crime prevention. My office is committed to making our neighborhoods safer places to live.

    By doing so, we will improve the quality of life for individuals and families, both young and old. It is imperative that we seek progress to reduce the negative influences that crime has on our children and to help safeguard the elderly.

  • Writer proud of A.R. Rucker cheerleaders

    I would like to thank the A.R. Rucker Middle School cheerleaders for being just that - middle school cheerleaders. These girls consistently complement the athletic programs at A.R. Rucker Middle School.

    They strive to do what cheerleaders should, which is lead the crowd in support of the athletes competing. I am proud to know that the A.R. Rucker Middle School cheerleaders take their positions as leaders and role models seriously.
