  • Mulvaney supports public education

    In an election year, it's simply amazing what candidates will latch on to in in order to make another candidate look bad. Case in point is the campaign for the Senate 16 seat between Rep. Mick Mulvaney and Democrat Mandy Powers-Norrell.

    Several weeks ago, the Charlotte Observer misstated that Mulvaney's children attended Indian Land Elementary when actually they attend Catholic school.

  • Storms harsher in other counties

    Lancaster County was spared the worst of Saturday afternoon’s severe storms.

    The county was under a tornado warning and severe thunderstorm warning late Saturday afternoon, but no damage was reported locally, according to Lancaster County Emergency Management.

  • Lady Vols have new faces, similar goal

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers have some new faces this softball season, but they hope for similar results this spring.Gone are five seniors who helped the Lady Vols win back-to-back state championships en route to a dazzling 70-7 record. That quality AJ quintet was stellar, but the Lady Vols return five key starters along with a solid nucleus which has the 2008 team upbeat.In softball, it starts with pitching.

  • Women by Design ministry team unveils new book Friday

    Good Friday 2008 will be marked by the local release of the newly-published book “A Month of Miracles: 30 Stories of the Unmistakable Presence of God,” co-authored by Lancaster’s Women by Design ministry team.

    Two of the six authors –  Kimberly Sowell and Edna Ellison – will be signing copies of the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Silver & Spice Gifts, 408 N. White St.

    The book features 30 heart-warming and tender devotionals.

  • Drought persists, despite some heavy rainfall in recent weeks

    Lancaster County has seen some rain in recent days, but residents are still being asked to conserve water.

    The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group recommends the region continue the current Stage 3 water restrictions implemented last fall to ensure an adequate water supply is available.  In their implementation of Stage 3 water restrictions, most public water systems in the river basin are prohibiting lawn watering.

  • Lancers golfers make strides

    The University of South Carolina at Lancaster Lancers golf team competed in the Tusculum Invitational at the Links Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn., on March 8-9.Although the event was reduced to a one-day event, due to snow on March 8, the USCL team continued to show signs of improvement.The Lancers carded a 315 total, an improvement over last year’s average. Shorter College from Rome, Ga., won the event with a 288 total. Two USCL golfers – Drew Walters and Phillip Knezevich – finished in the elite field in the top 40.

  • Lady Jackets sting AJ Vols

    Buford used a three-run sixth inning rally to take control of the game on the way to a 4-1 softball win over second-ranked Andrew Jackson.

    Leslie Pressley’s two-run double with the bases-loaded put host BHS up 3-1 and the Lady Jackets added another run on Kim Cauthen’s RBI-bunt single.

    “This was a great win for our girls,” BHS coach Sam Page said. “We played well and made some clutch plays. We really responded in that sixth inning.”

    BHS sophomore ace Jena Hallman hurled the win, scattering five hits and two walks.
