  • Coalition to hold town hall meeting

    Did you know that nearly three out of every 10 high school seniors in Lancaster County reported being drunk at least once in the last month?

    The Lancaster County Prevention Coalition, which conducts studies on underage drinking, is holding a town hall meeting Thursday in hopes of reducing those numbers.

    The Underage Drinking Prevention town hall meeting will be 6 p.m. at Lancaster High School auditorium. The community is invited to attend.

    The Indian Land Lady Warriors captured the Conference III-A softball championship, topping McBee 2-1 in a special play-off at Andrew Jackson High School on Tuesday.Indian Land’s Paige Brugh drove home Kelsey Young with the winning run to lift IL.Kristin Campbell, 7-3, was the winner, allowing three hits and three walks.

  • Teamwork key in Partners for Youth tournament win

  • Teen shoots another teen in leg

    A Lancaster teenager was shot after he and another teen were playing around with a gun on Friday, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

    The teens' names are not being released because of their ages.

    Sheriff's office spokesman Tom Holland said the two teens were "messing around with a gun" on York Street, with one teen shooting the other in the leg.

    "That's the indication right now, that it was just accidental," Holland said Saturday.

    Sheriff's investigators and Lancaster Police Department detectives worked to interview witnesses Friday afternoon.

  • CCA students win awards

    Carolina Christian Academy has a statewide spelling bee champ and he isn't ready to stop competing anytime soon.

    Papa Odita-Honnah, a fourth-grader at CCA, recently finished first in the S.C. Association of Christian Schools' upstate spelling bee. He came in first place in the bee in 2007, as well.

    Odita-Honnah is just one of dozens of CCA students to participate in various statewide competitions last month.

    About 30 CCA students won awards in academic and fine arts contests sponsored by the Association of Christian Schools.

  • Kershaw picks spot for park

    KERSHAW - A decision has been made on where a new children's playground in Kershaw will be built, and it's likely a familiar spot to many.

    The Kershaw Community Park Council approved a 6,000-square-foot site within the Stevens Park property, home to the Kershaw Recreation Center, said co-chairwoman Beverly Timmons.

    The group initially sought a different site on the Stevens Park property, but the town of Kershaw would have to open a road and close part of Ingram Street for that site to be used.

  • LHS ignites, rips Falcons

    The Lancaster High School baseball team kept its Class AAAA Upstate playoff hopes alive with a 10-6 win over host Nation Ford on Friday night in the LHS regular-season finale.Senior hurler Evan Byrd, in 4.2 innings of work, notched the win. He allowed no runs, two hits and a walk. Byrd struck out two.Michael Catoe went 2.1 innings and yielded six runs, six hits and a walk.The Bruins, 10-11-1, 8-6 in region play, responded at the plate as Byrd had two hits and drove in a run. Catoe had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

    Four planes in four days, including two 50-seaters, the streets of Philadelphia and a heart-stopping art exhibit – I survived it all.

    Thanks to a Lancaster County Council of the Arts grant, and the generosity of Fran Gardner and Christina Chastain, I had the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia for what we three believe was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Lady Vols' Twitty signs with Lander

    KERSHAW – Karmen Twitty’s athletic scholarship signing Wednesday at Andrew Jackson High also etched the Lady Volunteers’ track standout in AJ sports history.Twitty, headed to Lander University to run cross country for the Lady Bearcats, became the first AJ Lady Vols’ track athlete to sign a scholarship, according to veteran Vols track coach Robert Lambert.“We’ve had a few others who were on the track team, but signed in other sports,” Lambert said.“This is a monumental step for our track program with Karme

  • Red Cross volunteer helps out after Alabama tornado

    INDIAN LAND - Mike Huffstetler began learning about emergency response as a 12-year-old Boy Scout. He went on to become an Eagle Scout, volunteered with Gaston County Emergency Management for 10 years and even saved a swimmer's life in the 1970s.

    "It's amazing how your training comes back right away," Huffstetler said of facing an emergency situation. He has taken first aid, CPR, Red Cross and FEMA courses.
