  • Blackwood blazes in LMS young guns win

    The old adage “third times the charm” held true for Lancaster Motor Speedway fans and drivers Saturday night.

    After two straight rainouts, clear skies greeted the eager crowd as the 2008 season opened.

    First up was LMS’s newest class, “young guns.” This division was started to give younger drivers a chance to cut their teeth before facing veteran drivers.

    TOPS, Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Thursday at Lynwood Methodist Church, 1753 Lynwood Drive.   • Buford, AJ advance in Azalea

    Buford and Andrew Jackson have advanced to the single-elimination title round of the 18th annual Azalea Invitational softball tournament at Summerville.

    The Lady Jackets of Buford are 2-2 and used a 5-3 win over Williamsport, Pa., to move on to a game with Hartsville today at 9 a.m.

    AJ, which went 2-2 in pool play, plays Berea at 9 a.m.

    BHS sophomore hurler Jena Hallman struck out 12 Williamsport batters in posting the win Tuesday.

    Hallman allowed nine hits, three runs and no walks. Hallman aided her cause with two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

  • Thomas, Starnes file for House seat

    Two Democrats are competing for the state House District 45 seat.

    County Council District 2 representative Fred Thomas, 44, and Kershaw Town Administrator Tony Starnes, 58, have both filed for the seat with the Lancaster County Democratic Party.

    Fighting for jobs

    Thomas is serving his second term on Lancaster County Council.

    Before serving on County Council, Thomas also served as the state ombudsman for SCDAODAS, one of Gov. Jim Hodges' cabinet agencies.

  • 911 Driving School opening soon

    Parents of wannabe teen drivers can breathe a sigh of relief. A new business serving the area offers to take the task of training student drivers to the next level.

    The 911 Driving School, located in Fort Mill, offers teen driving courses taught exclusively by law enforcement professionals, including state troopers and local police officers.

    S.C. Highway Patrol officer Jeremy Sisler, an Indian Land resident, is the school's training director. His brother, Matt, owns the driving school.

  • USCL reveals master plan

    Nearly a dozen new buildings could adorn the campus of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster in the near future.

    In September, The Boudreaux Group, an architectural firm in Columbia, began working on a master plan for USCL that includes more administrative and classroom buildings, new health services facilities and student housing.

    The master plan sketches were developed based on USCL's newly created strategic plan, which USCL Dean Dr. John Catalano introduced before Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce members on Thursday at the Carole Ray Dowling Center.

  • Arts Draw seeks to draw a crowd

    Lancaster resident Savannah Cudd is a little nervous about Friday night.

    For the first time, Cudd's art will be on display in her hometown, as part of the Lancaster County Council of the Arts' Spring Arts Draw. Cudd's work will be on display at Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio on East Gay Street.

    Cudd, 24, said her interest in art began early.

    "Ever since I was old enough to hold a crayon," she said.

  • Great Falls Rescue Squad rodeo a success

    I am very pleased to report that our first IPRA sanctioned professional rodeo on March 14 and 15 was a success.

    The crowd on Saturday was much smaller than anticipated due to inclement weather, but the crowd on Friday night demonstrated that this rodeo will not be our last.

  • Adopt a Leader deserves award

    Folks across the Palmetto State are learning what many here have known for years. The Adopt A Leader program is working well, shaping young lives and building future leaders.

    The program, led by organizer Bobby Bailey, was recently honored by the S.C. School Board Association with the Champions for Public Education Award.

    When something is working well and having a positive impact on youngsters, as this program does, it's hard to keep it secret. The S.C. School Board Association made the presentation during a recent Lancaster County school board meeting.

  • Use balance with body-building protein

    High protein diets have triggered an explosion of interest, but just how much protein is enough or is too much?

    According to the Harvard School of Public Health, adults need a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight per day to keep body tissues from slowly breaking down.

    That works out to a little more than 7 grams of protein for every 20 pounds of body weight.

    But the numbers can fluctuate.
