  • Bruins wing Eagles in rain-shortened win

    The Lancaster High School baseball team made the most of a rain-shortened game, taking a 7-1 road win over Clover in Region III-AAAA play Friday night.

    LHS hurler Evan Byrd, 2-0, worked five frames for the win, allowing five hits, two walks and a run. He struck out one.

    LHS, 7-9, 5-5, was led by Bryan Gainer, who had two hits, including a double, and drove in five runs. Nick Ferguson, who had a RBI, had two hits as did Michael Catoe and Jimmie Jordan. Josh Warfield had a hit and Brion Strothers drew a walk and scored twice.

  • No threats reported at LHS on Friday

    Contrary to rumors, school officials said there were no fights, discovery of weapons or anything else at Lancaster High School on Friday that would have prompted a lockdown.

    Lancaster High Principal Dr. Joe Keenan said extra police officers were called in Friday morning merely for precaution.

    He said a rumor was spread Thursday at school that a fight was going to take place on Friday. However, there were no discipline issues the entire day. Also, officials didn’t find anything at the school that would raise concern Friday.

  • Students reach out to girl who lost everything in house fire

    They’re probably too young to understand the ins and outs of home insurance. And they may not be able to explain all the conditions that might cause a house fire.

    But there’s one thing for sure – North Elementary School kindergartners realize how much help a person needs if they lose their home in a fire.

    Saniiya Mingo, a kindergartner at the school, has received much support from fellow students and her teachers after her Chandler Place home burned a week ago.

    Take kindergartner Julia Sowell, for instance.

  • Storms cause no severe damage in county

    Lancaster County was lucky, despite tornado warnings and the severe thunderstorms that brought heavy rain Friday night and early Saturday morning.

    Lancaster County Emergency Management Director Morris Russell said while no property damage from the storms had been reported as of Saturday afternoon, people were still on edge.

    “There were a lot of people concerned last night, and for good reason,” Russell said. “But I think we got lucky again.”

  • Lady Vols battling in soccer campaign

    KERSHAW – For the Andrew Jackson High School girls soccer team, the injuries began just over a month ago and it’s been a battle this spring.

    AJ junior Sommer Zusin sprained her leg as the injury bug began to land its hard bite. Then, freshman Rebecca Johnson bruised her hip, sophomore Katherine Killingsworth hurt her leg and junior Brooke Watts sprained her ankle.

    Then, sophomore Allison Kelly limped off the field during a tournament match against Blue Ridge.

    AJ girls soccer coach Ronnie Wall said he knew he had to make a decision.

  • District names contest winners

    The Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District announced the winners of its 2007 conservation contests last week.

    The contest, open to students in the Lancaster County School District, carried the theme The Living Soil.

    Elementary school participants made either poster boards or bulletin boards that tied into soil and conservation. Four classes entered the conservation bulletin board contest and 500 students throughout the district entered the poster contest.

  • LHS's Williams retiring

    Lancaster High School baseball coach Steve Williams is hanging up his Bruins’ baseball cap for good at the end of the season.

    Williams, 54, will retire with the close of the Bruins’ 2008 campaign. In addition to his LHS coaching duties, Williams is also retiring as a physical education-health instructor and football coach at A.R. Rucker Middle School.

    Williams, who has taught and coached for 32 years, including 29 in the Lancaster County School District, cited “health issues” as a major reason in his decision.

  • Annual Relay for Life just a few weeks away

    The American Cancer Society has enjoyed consistent support from Lancaster County for 13 years, as  local residents have managed to raise more than $1 million for research during the annual Relay for Life.

    Despite hard economic times, volunteers are confident giving will stay plentiful in this year’s Relay for Life.

  • Mow money, mow money, mow money

    Spring is here again. Up on “the Charlotte Road,” we can tell things are starting to bloom and blossom.

    We’re seeing a few more pickups on the road that are pulling trailers loaded down with string trimmers, lawn tractors and gas cans.

    I guess these folks have begun their annual trek to some of the more affluent homes to manicure lush lawns and trim shrubbery and shape up those ornamental topiaries.

    Times sure have changed; cutting grass has now evolved into mowing and lawn maintenance.

  • KItty Wilson-Evans receives award from Sons of Confederate Veterans

    Slave re-enactor Kitty Wilson-Evans’ scene in Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” ended up unnoticed on the cutting room floor.

    But her stage performance as “Old Maw” in a Feb. 14, 2008, production of the David Chaltas’ play, “Two Women: One War” grabbed everyone’s attention during two sellout performances at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. 

    The retired kindergarten teacher who helps tell the story of slavery at Historic Brattonsville recently received an award she never saw coming.
