  • Lancaster man was charged in deaths

    BELMONT, N.C. – Two people were killed, including a former Belmont, N.C. mayor, when their car was struck by a Lancaster man in Gaston County Wednesday night.
    Lester Saunders Norman Jr., 41, was arrested after leading police on a car chase shortly after 10 p.m. that left two people killed and three people injured.

  • Ambulance knocks down man and pickup truck on a wild ride home

    A Van Wyck area man was not hurt in a dramatic wreck about 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, but at least an ambulance was on scene immediately –  it just happened to be the one that struck his truck.  
    George Player of the 3900 block of Charlotte Highway said he was just getting home from a quick run to nearby North Corner Groceries when he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the ambulance bearing down on his Chevrolet S-10.

  • Man charged in murder

    CHARLOTTE – A team of local, state and out-of-state authorities tracked down and arrested a Charlotte man Thursday for the murder of a Lancaster woman earlier this month.
    Roger L. Baskins, 39, of Charlotte, was arrested by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers Thursday morning in connection with the murder of 47-year-old Cynthia Barnes, who was found dead inside her East Dunlap Street home Feb. 9, according to a Lancaster Police Department press release.

  • Returnees key for BHS baseball

    The return of 10 players, including three starters, gives Buford High School baseball coach Eric Funderburk plenty of hope for the 2012 Jackets’ season.
    BHS, 16-6 and the Region IV-AA champion last spring, has a solid group of players back from the team including junior catcher Tripp Wright along with outfielders Jay Chambers  and Kholby Pate, who will also be counted on to pitch.
    Wright, a two-year starter, will handle the BHS hurlers at catcher. Evan “Buck Shot” Flynn, a freshman, will also work at catcher.
