  • Ban on car washing lifted

    The restrictions on Lancaster County water customers' use of the precious resource have been further loosened.

    While the Catawba-Wateree Basin remains in Stage 3 restrictions due to the ongoing drought, the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Group has informed its members, which include water suppliers in Lancaster County, that residential vehicle washing with a control nozzle, lawn watering and swimming pool filling is permitted one day a week.

    The change goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

  • Relay for life surpasses $185,000 goal

    The 48 teams that participated in the 2008 Relay for Life had exceeded the local goal before the first funnel cake was cooked on Friday night.Together, they raised $187,240.29, which will be used by the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research, along with cancer awareness and wellness programs.The goal for Lancaster County this year was $185,000, said Kimberly Gulledge, community field manager for the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society.“These teams should be proud of themselves,” she said.

  • BHS's Banks medalist; Eagles win title

    Central of Pageland shot a 623 to capture the title in the Conference VIII-AA golf tournament at the Lancster Golf Club on Thursday.Buford, with a 660, placed second behind the Eagles. The Jackets were led by Trevor Banks, who shot a 143 (72-71) for the two-day event at the LGC .Taylor Banks gave the Jackets a solid one-two links punch with a 145 for the two-day tournament. Taylor Banks shot a 77-78.

  • Lady Jackets down WHS

    Buford, the fourth seed out of Conference VIII-AA, knocked off top-seeded Waccamaw 5-1 in the opening round of the Class AA Lower State softball playoffs on Thursday.

    Lady Jackets’ ace Jena Hallman hurled a six-hitter and struck out eight to lead BHS, 13-10, to the four-run win.

    Hallman, who allowed only one walk, aided her cause with three singles and drove home two runs. Madisson Finley and Chandler Baxley each had a double and drove in a run. Baxley also scored a run.

  • Lancaster to host conference on youth substance abuse

    Lancaster will host the annual Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities Conference for the second time.

    It will be held May 14 to 16 at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. It is funded by a federal grant.

    The focus will be on how to address substance abuse from each individual user's habitat, recognizing cultural differences and how they should be factored into prevention.

  • Riverchase to offer 'acreage lifestyle'

    A Texas developer building in Lancaster County said one of the first things he learned about Lancaster is that he'd have to pronounce the county's name correctly.

    LGI Land President Eric Lipar's comment brought some laughs before officials got down to business for the Lancaster County Economic Development Corp.'s annual meeting on April 14.

    Lipar talked about his company's development, Riverchase Estates, which will be built on 2,000 acres on Riverside Road.

  • Kershaw preps for its annual Spring-a-thon

    KERSHAW – New activities are planned for this year's Kershaw Spring-a-thon, including one inspired by the popular game show "Deal or No Deal."

    This year's event will take place across two days, with the Miss Spring-a-thon pageant occurring May 16 at Kershaw Elementary School with the rest of the festivities happening May 17.

    Walkers in the Fun Walk, slated to start at 8 a.m. May 17, will pass by the planned children's park beside the Kershaw Recreation Center.

  • Prom season begins tonight

    The itinerary is set. The dresses and tuxedos are picked out and ready to go.

    But before Lancaster High School juniors and seniors head to their prom Saturday, officials wanted to remind them about the dangers of drinking and driving.

    On Thursday afternoon, those two classes gathered in the school's auditorium to hear a presentation about drunk driving and then sign a prom promise to not consume alcohol on Saturday.

  • 'I should have been smarter,' says woman fighting AIDS

    Yvonne "Bay Bay" Miller wants people to know a few things about AIDS.

    There's no such thing as safe sex, only safer sex, and it doesn't take long for the disease to develop from HIV to full-blown AIDS.

    People don't die from AIDS; they die from AIDS-related complications due to a ravaged immune system.

    Miller, 48, should know.

    She has AIDS, and she wants people to know her story before she dies, so maybe she can help someone before it's too late for them. She has a drive to look out for others, especially young people, who often think, "It can't happen to me."

  • Local Relay for Life shoots for $200,000 mark

    The 2007 Relay for Life drew more a crowd in excess of 6,000 to Lancaster Memorial Stadium.The goal of the overnight event is to spread awareness of cancer prevention and treatments and cures while honoring survivors and raising money for research to find more cures for cancer.In 13 years, Relay for Life has grown into the county’s largest fundraiser.Relay coordinator Donna Parsons said the reason for such widespread support is obvious.“It continues to grow because people want to support the American Cancer Society and its researc
