  • Arrest made in armed robbery

    A combination of surveillance footage and tips from the community helped police arrest a Lancaster man only hours after he fired a gun inside a convenience store.
    Montavious Winkfield, 24, 108 Seaboard Circle, was arrested at his home at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after a flood of tips poured into the Lancaster Police Department. He was arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery Monday at Midway Grocery, located at 426 W. Meeting St., according to a police department press release.

    The Lancaster High swim team capped regular-season action with a 236-90 win over Ridge View.

  • McGuinness, Beavers lead Lancers in 7-2 win

    The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers soccer team rolled to a 7-2 road win over the Oxford (Ga.) College Lady Eagles on Saturday.

    The Lancers came out strong in the first half, scoring the first three goals. With less than five minutes remaining, the Eagles finally found the net ending the half with a 3-1 USCL lead.

    He was the son of the late William Conley Sutton and Ruth Naomi Wallace Sutton.

  • Armed robber fires shot inside store

    A convenience store in the Lancaster city limits was robbed by a lone gunman early Monday afternoon.

    A cashier at Midway Grocery, 426 W. Meeting St., (at the intersection of North Wylie and Meeting streets) was robbed at gunpoint about 2 p.m. Monday, said Lancaster Police Chief Harlean Howard. 

    Howard, who was at the scene, said the robber fired a shot inside the business, but the cashier was not hurt. It is not known if any customers were inside the business.
