    Buford used a clutch power surge to keep alive its Class AA Lower State playoff hopes with a 10-5 comeback win over Waccamaw on Tuesday at Buford.The Lady Jackets ignited for a key seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning to notch the five-run softball win.Chandler Baxley’s three-run home run and Madisson Finley’s two-run shot triggered the Lady Jackets’ clutch seven-run rally.“We did a good job of hitting the ball and responded in a big way,” Buford coach Sam Page said.

  • Curfew takes effect in HS

    HEATH SPRINGS – Heath Springs Town Council has adopted a curfew that will give the town deputy authority in dealing with minors out in the early morning hours without parental or guardian supervision.

    The curfew applies to those 16 and younger.

    According to the new town ordinance, those 16 and younger cannot be out in town after 11 p.m. on weeknights while school is in session and not after 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The curfew is 11 p.m. on Sunday nights during the school year.

  • Man haunted by memories of fatal wreck

    Karl Kakadelis still feels pain and guilt about the accident in which his best friend, Wayne Blackburn, was killed almost five years ago.

    Kakadelis spoke about it to Buford Middle School students on April 23.

    Kakadelis was 19 on June 29, 2003, and was celebrating going to college.

    But less than a mile from where he was partying in Union County, N.C., Kakadelis lost control of his Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep flipped and Blackburn was thrown from the vehicle.

  • McPhearsons lead BHS in region meet

    The Buford High School track team notched four titles at the Conference VIII-AA meet in Cheraw.Eric McPhearson, an eighth-grader, led the Jackets, winning the 1600 (5:27) and the 3200 (12:07).Lamont McPhearson won the 800-meter run in 2:23, while the Lady Jackets’ 4 x 100 meter team captured a first.

  • Voters will decided who is 'out of touch'

    In Shannon Catoe’s letter, “Citizens face worse issues that threat of vouchers” in the April 27 edition of The Lancaster News, she uses slight of hand and sleaziness to refer to Mandy Powers-Norell as “out of touch and foolish.” It seems Ms. Catoe has a hard time believing that the masses are really that concerned about school vouchers. In several conversations that I’ve had, vouchers are indeed the “hot button item.”

  • Licensing: no; leash law: yes

    Karma isn't shy with the kisses – he doles them out wherever he goes.

    The probable Labrador retriever, about 2 years old, is staying with Indian Land residents Summer Kingery and Ken Hedges now. Kingery is an active member of the Humane Society of Lancaster County and trained in animal behavior.

    Karma was mentioned at County Council's meeting Monday night, when council was discussing second reading of an ordinance to toughen several of the county's animal laws.

  • Man charged in two robberies

    A Lancaster man was reportedly robbed at gunpoint last week after offering to help someone change a flat tire on 16th Street.

    Laurkeda Montrial "Magoo" Montgomery, 26, of 261 Pineridge Road, Kershaw, was charged Friday with two counts of armed robbery. Authorities say he was involved in this robbery and another one on Small Street.

    A man and several of his friends were standing at a 16th Street location about 10 a.m. Friday when Montgomery pulled up in a silver Suzuki Forenza with a right rear flat tire, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff's Office report.

  • LHS, AJ girls win; Buford fall 2-1

    The Lancaster High School Lady Bruins stayed alive in the Class AAAA Upper State softball playoffs, blanking Aiken High School 4-0 in an elimination game Friday.The Lady Bruins’ win advances Lancaster to an elimination game with Wren High School of Greenville on Monday at 6:30 p.m.Wren dropped a 2-1 loss to Gaffney on Friday night.

  • Man, 33, accused of stealing the same stuff twice

    Lancaster County Sheriff's Office investigators believe a Lancaster man stole the same stuff he stole last year.

    David Gordon, 33, of 2408 Camp Creek Road, has been charged with three counts of second-degree burglary (violent) and two counts of grand larceny.

    The burglary charges are classified as violent, because the burglaries were committed at night, and because Gordon has two prior burglary convictions, said sheriff's office spokesman Tom Holland.
