  • Homeless man continues his cross-country journey

    Roy Gleiter said if he can complete his journey, then so can resolute Americans make the economic and political systems speak for them.

    As cars passed by Gleiter's camp site just outside Buford on S.C. 9 last week, they honked. Gleiter is a homeless man who's traveling by foot with his mother, Debra Cowden, and their dog, Pofer. Their destination is the state of Washington.

    Gleiter, 49, not only has a long trip ahead, but a heavy load to carry. He's pulling a nearly 5,000-pound wagon, full of possessions. His mother and their dog are following him.

  • Jackets notch state tourney bid

    The Buford High School golf team finished fourth in the Class AA Lower State tournament at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell on Monday to earn a bid to the Class AA state tournament.The Jackets shot a 335 team total to finish behind Waccamaw, Bishop England and Central of Pageland.Waccamaw shot a 307, while Bishop England had a 313. Central, the Conference VIII-AA champion, finished with a 326. BHS, the VIII-AA runner-up, followed the Eagles.Buford was led by Trevor Banks’ 77 (36-41) and Taylor Banks’ 79 (39-40).

  • Hold IL graduation in school's new gym

    This year’s Indian Land High School graduation ceremony has become one big headache for everyone involved – the Class of 2008, their parents and school administrators.

    The school planned to hold the event at Byrnes Auditorium at Winthrop University, as it has done for the last several years. But this year, Byrnes is undergoing renovations, so it isn’t available. But there was some miscommunication and the high school didn’t realize it didn’t have a graduation venue until March.

  • No rain means LMS top night

    For the eighth straight week, clouds loomed over Lancaster Motor Speedway, again looking as if it would bring the dreaded word all race fans hate – rain. But Mother Nature relented and for the second straight week, the track got in a full event between brief showers.First up was the young guns. Starting on the front row were a pair of previous winners, Andrew Blackwood and Austin Baker.

  • IL's Scott leads state qualifiers

    A trio of Indian Land High  athletes captured firsts at the Class A Upper State track meet at Landrum.IL also claimed three seconds and a fourth. The Warriors have seven athletes set to compete in the Class A state meet on Saturday at Spring Valley.Wes Scott, IL’s ace distance runner, won the 3200-meter run in 11:02 and 1600-meter run in 4:58.8. IL freshman Mariah Williams also placed in two events, finishing first in the 100 meters hurdles in 17.66 and fourth in the high jump with a 4-foot, 10-inch effort.
