  • Kershaw OKs its $2.8M budget

    KERSHAW – Kershaw Town Council gave unanimous final approval to the town's 2008-09 budget Monday night with no discussion.

    Council discussed the budget at its regular meeting on May 12 after Town Administrator Tony Starnes presented it.

    Mayor Tommy Baker praised Starnes for slashing the proposed budget. The approved budget ($2,881,710 ) reflects a nearly 2 percent decrease over last year's budget.

    "He (Starnes) has reduced expenses for the town of Kershaw," Baker said at the May 12 meeting.

  • $750M in last 20 years

    Many residents may not realize it, but the Lancaster & Chester Railway acts as an inland port for goods headed to coastal ports, such as Charleston.

    The railway is vital to the area for attracting industry, and railway officials expect it to be an important part of economic development in Lancaster County for years to come.

    Railway President Steve Gedney recently gave an update on the L&C to Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce members.

  • Miller should do research before writing column

    In Bruce Miller’s May 30th column “Candidates should go extra mile for their constituents,” it seems as though he should have been a staff writer for The Lancaster News – not a guest columnist. He’s had several columns in the paper, as well as the Carolina Gateway, lately. However, I felt the most recent article is one that warrants a response from a lifelong Lancaster County resident.

    In his article, Mr. Miller makes a very bold statement by saying he and Donald Huffman are the only candidates running for House District 45.

  • Rao Ride remembers all law officers

    Remembering all officers – that's the purpose of the 6th annual RAO Motorcycle Charity Ride.

    The ride will be held on Saturday, with registration held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at North Elementary School, 1100 Roddey Drive.

    The ride is being sponsored by The Sworn Few, a local motorcycle club consisting of law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical workers and military personnel.

  • 8 county races uncontested

    While this year's uncontested local races won't offer any surprises on who gets elected, they still matter.

    This year's uncontested races include Lancaster County sheriff, County Council District 5, S.C. House District 44 and 65, and Lancaster County coroner, treasurer, auditor and clerk of court.

    None of the unopposed candidates will appear on the June 10 primary ballots.

  • Paramedics prove again they’re best in the state

    A school shooting is a situation you hope will never occur, but if it does, county emergency response officials recently proved they’re capable of handling the daunting task.

    Lancaster County paramedics Kelly Snipes and Greg Robinson with the county’s Emergency Medical Services recently captured first place in the 2008 statewide competition in Myrtle Beach.

  • Don’t forget reassessment vote in 2005

    I live in Lancaster County Council District 7 in the Buford area. I hope the people in District 7 and Lancaster County have not forgotten the reassessment in 2005 that Lancaster County Council had said it was not going to do. Then five council members changed their mind to do it before we could vote not to allow a larger increase than 15 percent for three years. The appraised value of one of our pieces of property went up 45 percent just because we live in the Buford area.

    The Lancaster Post 31 junior team improved its American Legion baseball League V record to 2-1 with a 5-3 win over York at Eggleton Field on Monday night.Will Gaston, who worked five innings in relief, was the winner.
