  • Fortson proves she's no quitter

    Like a lot of graduates, Lancaster High School senior Debra Fortson is a little nervous about walking across the stage Friday night.

    She's going to wear flats. She's going to make sure there's nothing on the stage she can trip over.

    "I don't want to fall on my face," said Fortson, 18.

    But walking across the stage should be one of the easiest things Fortson has done during her high school career. The road to graduation hasn't been easy.

    When she was 13 and in the ninth grade, Fortson found out she was pregnant.

  • County school district shows disrespect to armed forces

    I did not know that students did not have Memorial Day off until field day.

    Having been in other school districts in the past, I was caught off guard, especially since Charlotte and the Rock Hill districts were off.

    I'm just curious as to why. I was not really concerned about the attendance issue point because my kids did not attend out of respect for our armed forces. My main concern is why the school district does not respect our armed forces. There are other days the kids could have gone to school and had this day off. For example, maybe one day for Easter instead of two.

  • DeMint staffers help build Habitat house

    YouthBuild workers got a boost Tuesday morning when staffers from U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint's office came to Lancaster to help them build a house for Habitat for Humanity.

    Three DeMint staffers – regional director Kelly Long and legislative aides Kimberly Gluck and Brian Eisele – joined hands with several of YouthBuild's young adults to install the insulation and drywall of a three-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot home.

    YouthBuild will nearly finish the house, but the Habitat for Humanity program requires "sweat equity" from the new homeowners to finish the house.

  • Crawford focusing on 2008 Olympics

    Indian Land’s Shawn Crawford is focused on returning to the Olympics this summer in Beijing and hopefully earning another gold medal. Crawford, a Van Wyck native, is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 200-meter sprint. He was also a member of the U.S.

  • Member-guest golf tourney June 14-15

    Registration for the 28th annual member-guest golf tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club continues to June 11 at the LGC pro shop.The two-day tournament, regarded as one of the top events at the Lancaster Golf Club each season, is set for June 14-15.Friday opens play with an 18-hole par-three tournament followed by a cookout at the patio. Play opens Saturday and continues Sunday.“This is one of our best tournaments each year,” LGC pro Phil Small said.

  • Bill would have had caused 'unintended consequences'

    Larry Neal asked in his letter “Writer questions Mulvaney’s vote on inhalants” in the May 23 edition of The Lancaster News why I voted against a bill to ban alcohol inhalants. It is a fair question, and I am happy to answer it.

    By way of quick background, the bill was designed to outlaw a new device called an “alcohol without liquid” device. This is essentially an inhaler for alcohol. The device is currently not available in South Carolina.

  • State champs Hunter, Banks shine on the greens

    The 2008 spring will go down as a landmark season for Lancaster County high school golf.

    Golfers from Lancaster County earned two of the four individual state championships at the state tournaments earlier this month.

    One state crown is impressive, but two from the same county, is an extraordinary effort.

    Indian Land’s Chase Hunter shot a 147 (75-72) to win the Class A medalist, a first for the Warriors’ golf program, at the Stoney Point Golf Club in Greenwood.

  • Fort Mill rallies, tops Post 31

    Fort Mill foiled Lancaster Post 31’s opener in League V Legion baseball play with a 13-11 win over P-31 on Monday night.Lancaster, 2-3, 0-1, held a 9-1 lead after six innings and needed two runs to close out Post 43, but the Fort Mill team fought back.Post 43, seeking to rebound from a 6-14 mark of last season, scored six in the seventh inning to make it 9-7.

  • Kershaw town budget less than a year ago

    KERSHAW – The town of Kershaw has good news to report. The town budget for 2008-09 is less than last year's.

    Kershaw Town Council went over the town's proposed budget with Town Administrator Tony Starnes and voted unanimously to approve it on first reading May 12.

    Mayor Tommy Baker commended Starnes' for his work to tighten up the budget.

    "He (Starnes) has reduced expenses for the town of Kershaw," Baker said about the almost 2 percent drop in the proposed budget over last year's.
