Taylor Burgess' body was so weak he had to crawl to get around his house.

A rare syndrome called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is the reason why Burgess went from marching in the band to receiving all his schooling from home.

At one point, doctors told the Burgess' family to prepare for his funeral.

But thanks to proper medical care and a whole lot of prayer and determination, Burgess' syndrome went into remission. He returned to Buford High for his senior year and is now about to receive his high school diploma.

Problems arise

 Before I could get my letter applauding The Lancaster News for its opposition to the proposed courthouse, Mr. John Baker supplies all the technical fine points and logic to support the need for a new courthouse.

The next thing I see is a column by Steve Willis, our county administrator. Now, I am confused and confounded. Betcha that would make me a good politician, able to change horses in mid-stream.

With apologies to the news editorial board, I sorta lean toward the views of Mr. Willis, maybe it’s because I can remember when.

“Look out! Run for your life,” Sgt. Clifford Sims shouted to his platoon after hearing the all-too-familiar clicking sound in the dense underbrush. Too late. The Vietnamese booby trap exploded as Sims unhesitatingly hurled himself upon the device, taking its full impact. His blood-soaked flesh scattered in a hundred different directions. He gave his life to save theirs. Sims earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his sacrifice.

I am writing concerning the disrespect shown to the soldiers who gave their lives defending this country. I am a student at Lancaster High School and I feel that the Lancaster County School Board’s decision to have school on Memorial Day is very hypocritical. We are taught in school to honor and respect the ones who decide to serve in the military and fight for our freedoms and yet the school board decides that it is justified to have classes rather than show the very respect they teach us to have.
