  • We can make positive impact on our economy

    In the last few weeks we have reported about the layoffs at Springs Memorial Hospital, the possibility of job losses at the Lancaster County School District, pleas from nonprofit agencies for continual funding and the inability of a local philanthropic organization to offer free summer camp for at-risk children this year.

    Add to that $4 per gallon gas, high unemployment, decreasing home values, increasing food costs and you get a bleak picture of our economy.

  • Family copes with loss of 3 relatives

    Three lives were lost in a flash Monday.

    A mother. A daughter. A granddaughter.

    Doris McClinton, Felicia McClinton and Crystal Evans were heading back from a Memorial Day event at a relative's house in Rock Hill when the unthinkable happened.

    The SUV they were riding in hit a tree. They died right there.

    Nobody had a chance to say goodbye. There were no final "I love yous." Now family members are coping with the awful feeling of losing three loved ones in an instant.

  • Hartley keeps animal abuse in limelight

    I wanted to commend senior reporter Jenny Hartley for her outstanding work to put animals in the limelight and on the front cover of The Lancaster News. As a teacher and an animal lover I am flabbergasted by the amount of people who treat animals as if their lives were completely expendable. However, it is individuals like you who have a voice and can shed some light on the cruel world of animal abuse and neglect.

  • Economist says next two years will be slow

    Things don't look so good for the national economy over the next two years, said a visiting economist at Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce's first economic forum on May 20.

    Steve Rick, a Ph.D. candidate in economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told the chamber's membership that times are tough and will get tougher. The group met over breakfast at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster's Bradley Building.

  • School district owes apology about Memorial Day observance

    I was shocked and dismayed to read that the Lancaster School District did not close in observance of Memorial Day. Does the school district not have history books in the schools? Do school board officials not know of the supreme sacrifice so many brave Americans have made to defend our freedoms? Do they not care about the loss so many millions of American family members endured so we all can enjoy life, liberty and pursuit of happiness?

    What is the school district teaching our children by its callous attitude toward our fallen heroes?

  • Woman, 46, dies in cycle crash

    ROCK HILL – A Lancaster woman was killed over the weekend in a three-vehicle accident in York County.

    Peggy Landry, 46, was driving a 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle about 4:20 p.m. Saturday when she was struck from behind by a Dodge pickup, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

    The accident occurred east of Rock Hill on Lesslie Highway at the Springdale Road intersection.

  • Three die in single-vehicle wreck on S.C. 5

    An evening visiting family turned fatal for three Lancaster relatives Monday night.

    Doris McClinton, 64, Felicia McClinton, 34, and Crystal Evans, 23, died in a one-vehicle accident on S.C. 5.

    They were among seven people riding in a 2004 GMC Yukon Denali that ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

    The SUV was traveling east, Trooper Josef Robinson said. The wreck happened about 10:30 p.m., just west of the Old Hickory Road intersection.

  • Revolutionary War battle to be re-enacted June 7

    GREAT FALLS – A limner will be on hand at the seventh annual Battle of Beckhamville re-enactment in Great Falls.

    But what in the world is a limner?

    A limner is one who draws, paints and outlines in clear, sharp detail.

    The limner will be joined by a refugee from France who is a lace merchant, a broom maker, a tombstone carver and a man who "makes" salt.

    You'll be able to see them all during the Beckhamville re-enactment, set for June 6, 7 and 8 in Great Falls on the original battlefield.

  • Fortson proves she's no quitter

    Like a lot of graduates, Lancaster High School senior Debra Fortson is a little nervous about walking across the stage Friday night.

    She's going to wear flats. She's going to make sure there's nothing on the stage she can trip over.

    "I don't want to fall on my face," said Fortson, 18.

    But walking across the stage should be one of the easiest things Fortson has done during her high school career. The road to graduation hasn't been easy.

    When she was 13 and in the ninth grade, Fortson found out she was pregnant.
