  • Four amendments on state ballot

    South Carolina voters have four amendments to the state Constitution to consider in the upcoming election. They involve hunting and fishing rights, secret ballot voting for labor union representatives and the state’s rainy day funds.

  • Be prepared before you go to the polls

    Take some time to prepare before next Tuesday’s election.
    Become familiar with the candidates, as well as the four proposed state constitutional amendments. Educate yourself on the issues and those running for office.
    Visit candidates’ websites and other sites, such as scvotes.org, which offer a plethora of information on candidates and voting.
    Know your voting precinct, especially if you have moved and are a new voter.

  • Official expects high turnout

    A county election official expects high turnout for Tuesday’s election.
    “The midterm elections usually have low turnout, but if the absentee precinct is any indication, this time is going to be a lot different,” county election official Cassie Stump said. “We’ve already voted over 2,000 and that’s huge for our office.”
    Stump said there are 47,287 registered voters in Lancaster County.

  • South Middle hosts pumpkin decorating contest

    She has a shiny face, red lips, long hair and wears a pointy black hat.
    Any other day, she’d be all orange, but on Thursday she became the Queen Witch of South Middle School.
    That was the name given to one of the several carved and decorated pumpkins on display at the school Thursday.
    Last week, South Middle held its Spirit Week, which culminated with a pumpkin-decorating contest. Faculty and staff were divided into 14 teams, and the students voted on which team’s pumpkin they liked the best.

  • Mining for Ghosts

    When it comes to things that go bump in the night, Jane Starr readily admits some of them can’t be explained.
    But they are out there, said Starr, the founder and lead investigator of Purely Paranormal Investigations.
    “If you take everything away that’s extraneous, what you have left is the truth,” Starr said during a paranormal workshop held at the Hot Box on Oct. 23.

  • Teachers are a strange breed

    It was late October. The leaves were slowly turning colors, but the days were still sunny and warm.
    I was up and at it for another day of school and could smell hot buttered toast coming from the kitchen.
    I walked in to find some Merita and a bowl of Wheaties waiting for me on the white enameled table.
    Momma was scurrying about to making sure I’d be at school on time. Shucks, school was only three houses up the street. I seriously doubt I would be late, but I could never convince her of that.

  • Dazzlers set tryouts

     

       

    The Carolina Dazzlers will hold tryouts for girls 12-under and 14-under fast pitch travel teams on Saturday.

    The tryout will be held at the Rodman Sports Complex on Blaney Road in Richburg at noon.

    Antquavious Roberts quite likely isn’t the most well known Bruins’ player on the 2010 Lancaster High School football team.

    Most know him simply as “Q” Roberts.
