  • Prices reach new record

    Barbara Miller bought a Chrysler LeBaron a few months ago to drive instead of her Ford Expedition. Her sole purpose was to get more miles per gallon.

    But as she filled up her Chrysler at Crenco on South Main Street, she was left thinking about other ways to combat the rising cost.

    On Tuesday, gasoline prices rose to a record national average of $4.04 a gallon. The increase has forced many people to change their driving habits and cut back on their overall spending.

    "It's bad everywhere," Miller said. "I wish somebody would do something."

  • Writer unhappy with council's decision

    I am shocked to see that Lancaster County Council voted to spend $75,000 of Lancaster’s money to subsidize a private venture failure. Is councilman Wayne Kersey the only councilman to be concerned with fiduciary responsibility?

    Would the air show have donated $75,000 to Lancaster County if there had been that much more made on the venture than was anticipated? I doubt it.

    If you are an entrepreneur, you play at your own risk. You win some and you lose some. I wish the county had subsidized some of my less fortunate ventures. What a sweet deal.

  • Payday lending an endangered species in South Carolina?

    The S.C. Legislature took no action to further regulate payday lending in the legislative session that ended last week, but state Sen. Greg Gregory, R-Lancaster, thinks payday lending is now set up for a fall when the Legislature convenes in 2009.

    The Legislature considered tighter regulations of the industry this year, but procedural moves buried the bill late in the legislative session.

  • Juniors solid in hot opener

    Stellar golf on a scorching day highlighted the 2008 opener of the Lancaster chapter of the S.C. Junior Golf Association on Monday at the Lancaster Golf Club.A total of 107 golfers competed on the course where play began at 8 a.m. and closed around 3 p.m.“It was a good day for us,” said LJGA director Raymon Chisom.

  • Boy, 5, shoots self by accident

    A 5-year-old Lancaster boy was flown to the hospital after he apparently shot himself Tuesday morning.

    The boy was inside his home on Winston Drive about 9:45 a.m. when he shot himself in the right shoulder with a pistol, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

    "The gun was in the house and the boy was playing with it," sheriff's office spokesman Tom Holland said. "It appears to be an accident."

    The boy's father was in the home when the shooting happened. Two guns – a pistol and a rifle – were later found in the home. One shot was fired.

  • Sistare unseats Kersey; McCullough beats Patterson by 2-1 margin

    County Council likely has two new members after Tuesday’s primary.

    One will probably be the third woman ever to be elected to County Council. The other is a Sun City Carolina Lakes resident new to the political arena.

    District 7 race

    Kathy Sistare won the County Council District 7 race, a Democratic primary. She received 421 votes to 357 votes for Wayne Kersey’s 357 votes.

    When most of the precincts came in, a shout came up from Sistare’s supporters, who were wearing red campaign shirts in solidarity.

  • Thomas, Long win District 45 nominations

    Republican Deborah Long will face Democrat Fred Thomas in the race for the S.C. House District 45 seat in November.

    The two bested their opponents in their respective primary on Tuesday night.

    The district covers mostly Lancaster County and parts of York County.

    Long, who's seeking political office for the first time, received 69 percent of the Lancaster County votes and Bruce Miller had nearly 31 percent –1087 to 482, according to unofficial totals. She won each of the 13 Lancaster County precincts except Belair.

  • Let's learn from our mistakes

    You have to commend organizers for trying something of the magnitude of the Palmetto Thunder Air Show held May 17-18 at the Lancaster County Airport.

    The event was a major undertaking. It took months of planning. People gave their time to help make the event become a reality. They gave up their weekends to work at the show. And it did not go unnoticed. Spectators wrote raving reviews and praised the show and the “courteous and professional” volunteers.

  • Juniors fall at Gaffney, 6-3

    The Lancaster Post 31 junior baseball team fell to 4-4 overall, 3-2 in League V play, after suffering a 6-3 road loss to Gaffney on Saturday.Gaffney took an early lead and stayed on top for the three-run win.Ron Trapps, who worked 2.1 innings, took the loss. He allowed three runs, three hits and five walks. Trapps struck out three. Eric Mojica also pitched, hurling 3.2 innings, yielding seven hits, three runs and four walks. He fanned two batters.Adam Eubanks led the offense with two hits. Zack Rollings had a hit and drove in a run with a sacrifice.
