  • Desperate evacuation from Puerto Rico

    Like millions of other Americans, David Garcia waited with dread Sept 19 as Hurricane Maria approached his beloved Puerto Rico, the second major hurricane to threaten the island in two weeks.
    Huddled around a phone at their home in Indian Land, Garcia and wife Jennifer checked in with his cousin, Ivette Escobar, back on the island with her family.

  • USCL sets youth swimming lessons

     

     

    Youth swimming lessons at the Gregory Health and Wellness Center pool at USC Lancaster will be held Oct. 16-Nov.9.

    Classes meet Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6:30, and 6:30 p.m. to 7.

    The Tuesday-Thursday classes are 6 p.m. to 6:30 and 6:30 p.m. to 7.

    Classes offered are aqua-tot, level 1, level 2 and level 3.

    Classes meet twice a week for four weeks.

  • Rams’ late charge decks Jackets

     

    BUFORD – The No. 11 Chesterfield Rams out-paced ninth-ranked Buford at Jackets Stadium, handing BHS its second consecutive Region IV-AA loss, 31-14 on Friday night.

    Buford, 5-2, led early, but let the game slip away late in the final period.

    All knotted at 14 to start the final quarter, Chesterfield took the early fourth-quarter lead when Travis Bowen scored on a four-yard run.

  • Column: The simple lesson from Las Vegas: Evil exists

    Once again we have witnessed the graphic reality of evil. One man, for reasons yet unknown, decided to take the lives of as many as possible in an attack on a crowd enjoying a Las Vegas concert.
    He carefully chose the position to give him an unobstructed view of his target. He secretly, seemingly unnoticed, stockpiled a cache of weapons. At the most opportune moment, he opened fire on that large, unsuspecting crowd. As of this writing, 59 individuals are dead, including the gunman, and more than 500 injured, from this act of terror.

  • Column: A troubling visit to my hometown

    Recently, I visited my hometown of Lancaster and was perplexed by the number of stories I heard concerning violent crime there and the number of people who have gone to jail or prison over the past decade.
    To me, the demographics of Lancaster haven’t changed very much since I lived there in the 1960’s, but crime seems to be worse. Talking to many of my friends, it now seems that violence is tearing apart our city.

  • Lady Knights top Buford in region volleyball

    North Central rallied to hand Buford its first Region IV-AA volleyball loss on Tuesday during the Lady Knights’ annual pink out game at NCHS.

    North Central, the defending region champion, opened with a 27-25 win over the Lady Jackets, but BHS rallied for two straight wins, 25-18 and 25-19.

    North Central, in game four, forced a decisive fifth game with a 25-17 win.

    In the final match, the host Lady Knights rallied for a 20-18 win.

    North Central and Buford are now tied for the region lead, each with a 9-1 mark.

    Lancaster High School senior football players Kendrick Shropshire and Ben Rivers aren’t household names among LHS football fans, but they have their place.

    “I call them blue-collar Bruins,” LHS fourth-year head football coach Bobby Collins said. “They don’t grab all the headlines and accolades, but what they do and the way they play are vital for us.

  • Howze sparks seniors in LHS powder puff game win

    Keiana Howze scored three touchdowns to spark the seniors to a 35-14 win over the juniors in the eighth annual Lancaster High School junior-senior powder puff football game at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.

    Howze’s three touchdowns all came on scoring runs for the seniors.

    Ashley Abbott had a touchdown run to aid the seniors and Gracie Revels caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Abbott.

    Madison Carter sparked the senior defense, picking off a pass.
