  • LSWCD announce winners of photo contests

    The Lancaster Soil and Water Conservation District announced the winners of its 2012-13 Conservation Photo contests.

    LSWCD held two photo contests during the current school year for all high school students in the county.

    The contest was divided into four categories: Conservation In Action, Conservation Practices, Agriculture and Conservation Across America and Close Up Conservation.

    Photos were judged on technical merit and composition.

    The first-place winners received a $20 gift card and second-place winners received a $15 gift card.

  • Oh, so close!

    GILBERT – The finality of a gut-wrenching sudden- death 4-3 loss in the Class AA state championship soccer match couldn’t tarnish a brilliant Indian Land High School soccer season Saturday afternoon, May 18.

    As the dejected Warriors left Leonard Price Field following Bishop England’s narrow win over Indian Land, there was plenty of praise for the two-time Class AA Upper State champions.

  • Sunrise Summer Camp starts June 3

    KERSHAW – Here’s something to get your children away from the TV, computer and video games.

    Organizers are getting the word out about Kershaw’s Sunrise Summer Camp, which offers a variety of activities for children ages 5 through 13.

    The camp, which has run about 10 years now, will be held at the Kershaw Recreation Center off Close Circle.

    It begins June 3 and ends Aug. 16.

  • Memorial Day program set for 3 p.m. Sunday

    In the big picture, 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday isn’t very long. 

    For that matter, hearing one name called out during that hour doesn’t usually mean much.

    But when that name belonged to a U.S. Armed Forces member and was once etched on the pocket flap of a uniform, hearing it called one more time means something. 

    Locals who fought and served in the U.S. military will be honored at 3 p.m. Sunday during the annual Memorial Day Service at Lancaster Memorial Park, 1389 Memorial Park Road.

    How many teenagers do you know, if stuck at home for long, wouldn’t have to be reminded, cajoled, urged, pressured or out-and-out threatened to keep up with their classwork?

    Let’s be honest. There aren’t many.

    There is at least one outstanding local exception, though, and her name is Taylor Ashley.
