  • Mobile Vet Centers reach out in rural areas

    One of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Centers (MVCs) is coming here. Veterans are invited to visit the University of South Carolina Lancaster, 476 Hubbard Drive, from noon to 3 p.m. April 22 to get a close look at the center, as well as the services it offers.

    Expectations are high for the Andrew Jackson  men’s varsity soccer program after two consecutive appearances in the quarterfinals of the Class AA Upper State playoffs.

  • Lady Vols booters seek consistent play


    Andrew Jackson High  girls soccer coach Lee Hanna said the key for the Lady Vols’ booters this season is consistent play.

    Hanna, assisted by Kim Threatt, has his share of experience this season, including 13 returnees.

  • Martial arts tourney action-packed event


    A chilly, rainy March morning greeted competitors and spectators for the 41st  Universal Martial Arts Championships at the Springdale Recreation Center in Lancaster on Saturday, March 14.

    The event is sponsored by Hanshi James E. White and the Universal Karate Studios.

  • Lady Vols down Warriors, Bruins


    The Andrew Jackson Lady Vols softball team stayed unbeaten in Region IV-AA play with a 2-1 home win over county rival Indian Land on Friday, March 27.

    IL took an early 1-0 lead, but AJ, 10-3, 6-0, rallied for two runs to notch the comeback win behind hurler Hannah Cobb, who tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine batters. She walked one.

  • SMC signs Crenshaw


    BUFORD – Buford High School ace golfer Garrett Crenshaw is extending his family links legacy as well as his education and athletic career.

    Crenshaw, a three-sport standout at the eastern Lancaster County Class AA high school, is following in some familiar footsteps.

  • Rolly and Betty Dawkins celebrate 50 years

    Rolly G. and Betty Elkins Dawkins of Lancaster celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows on Feb. 7, 2015, at Mount Calvary AME Zion Church. The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Dr. Robert E. Christian Sr. and Rev. Roosevelt Alexander.
    The couple was married Feb. 5, 1965, in Newberry. They have three daughters and four grandchildren. Betty is a retired cafeteria worker and Rolly is a Vietnam veteran and pastor of Mount Calvary AME Zion Church.

  • Pietrangeli-Saltrelli Engagement

    Judy Jane Pietrangeli and David Anthony Saltrelli will be married at 1 p.m. May 3, 2015, at Bon Appetite in Dunedin, Fla.
    The bride is the daughter of Lt. Col. James D. and Margaret Ann Pietrangeli of Ocala, Fla. She is the mother of James Pietrangeli Burbee and his wife Kristy of Mount Holly, N.C., and Sara Burbee Bowers and her husband Mike of Indian Land. She is a grandmother to Ayla and Henry Bridges of Indian Land. She is the former president and CEO of The Burbee Place Child Development Centers in Fort Mill and Lancaster. She is now a semi-retired jewelry designer.

  • Bowers-Sullivan Engagement

    Tim and Michelle Bowers announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Nicole Bowers, all of Heath Springs, to Jeffery Norris Sullivan of Kershaw.
    The wedding is planned for 4 p.m. April 4, 2015, at New Hope Baptist Church in Lancaster.
    Miss Bowers is the granddaughter of Gerald and Genie Bowers of Lancaster and the late Jesse and Imogene Catoe. She is a 2013 graduate of Bowers Homeschool Academy and earned a degree from the Therapeutic Massage Training Institute in 2015. She works at Black Stone Massage Studio.

  • Smith-Phillips Engagement

    Adrienna Smith of Lancaster announces the engagement of her daughter, Amber Smith of Ladson, to Earl Phillips of Charleston.
    The wedding is planned for 3 p.m. Sept. 19, 2015, at Saluda Shoals Park in Columbia.
    Miss Smith is the daughter of the late Moses Smith Jr. She is the granddaughter of the late Moses Sr. and Earlene Smith and the late Herbert and Willie M. Harper. She is a 2003 graduate of Lancaster High School and received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2008. She is a histotechnologist.
