  • Women’s warming center opens as frigid air settles in

    A women and children’s warming center opened Tuesday at 1232 Trestle Ln. in Lancaster, just in time for this week’s big freeze, but no guests showed up the first two nights.
    “It takes a couple of days to catch on,” said Deborah Boulware, director of Lancaster County United Way, which is spearheading the initiative.
    The center will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily through mid-March, Boulware said. Meals are served and security guards, provided through the Salvation Army, stay through the night.

  • Inmate stabbed at Kershaw prison

    An inmate was stabbed Tuesday during an assault at Kershaw Correctional Institution in Lancaster County.
    The incident happened about 12:30 p.m., said S.C. Department of Corrections spokesman Jeffrey Taillon,
    “The inmate was taken offsite for medical treatment,” Taillon said.
    The victim’s name and information on his condition were not released, but Taillon noted he was returned to KCI the same day.

  • Lancaster woman dies in single-vehicle collision

    A Lancaster woman died shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday when she was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 9 in Buford near Heyward Hough Road.

    Identified by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office as 60-year-old Deborah Roberts, she was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Lynette Walker.

    According to S.C. Highway Patrol Officer Joe Hovis, Roberts was traveling East on Highway 9 when her vehicle left the roadway, overcorrected and hit a fence and a tree.

    Holiday closings

    ◆ Lancaster city and county offices will be closed on Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Both offices will resume normal business hours on Jan. 16. Emergency services, such as fire, police and EMS, will operate normal hours.

    All Lancaster County schools will be closed Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but will re-open on Jan. 16.

    Local student makes Coker dean’s list
    Kimberly Ghent of Lancaster has been named to Coker College’s fall 2017 dean’s list. To qualify, students must earn at least a 3.75 grade-point average and complete at least 12 semester hours.

  • CCA collects 2,100 cans of food for HOPE

    Carolina Christian Academy students collected more than 2,100 cans of food for HOPE of Lancaster in the school’s 20th-annual food drive.
    The homerooms at Carolina Christian competed against each other to see which one could bring the most cans per student for HOPE.
    This year, the sixth-grade homeroom came in third, with a total of 346 cans. Third grade came in second with 354 cans. The No. 1 class was fifth grade with a total of 363 cans.
    The winning class is awarded a free party by the school.

  • Senate bill would give schools more freedom to set calendars

    Lancaster County School District officials believe it’s important to finish the first semester of school before winter break.
    That’s why they are hoping state legislators will pass a Senate bill that would allow each district to set its own start dates, without the present requirement to wait until at least the third Monday in August.
    LCSD is in the process of building its 2018-19 academic calendar, which will be voted on by the school board during its February meeting.

  • Metzler-Garris Wedding

    Jessica Lee Metzler and Michael Dillon Garris, both of Lancaster, were married at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at Fellowship Bible Church of Lancaster, by Dr. Huey A. Mills and the Rev. Jesse Adams.

    The bride is the daughter of David and Janet Metzler. She is the granddaughter of Vic and Linda Metzler and Julius and Joyce Bowers.
