  • Gold mine a step closer to opening

    KERSHAW – Romarco Minerals Inc., the parent company of the Haile Gold Mine, recently announced that the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has issued a proposed Section 401 Water Quality Certification.

    The permit is a prerequisite for the Haile Gold Mine application for a permit under the Clean Water Act for the Haile Gold Mine project.

    The Lancaster County NAACP held a election candidates’ forum Thursday, Oct. 16 in the First Washington Baptist Church fellowship hall that was attended by about 50 potential voters who were introduced to local candidates involved in the Nov. 4 General Election.

    As far as the Palmetto State’s 2014 gubernatorial race goes, it feels like déjà vu.

    In what seems like a replay of 2010, the two major candidates in the race are once again Democratic challenger S.C. Sen. Vincent Sheheen (D-27) and incumbent Republican Nikki Haley.

  • Student enrollment in AP courses dips but still reflects an upturn

    The number of Lancaster County high school students taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses for college credit slipped slightly during the 2013-14 school year, but still reflects an upward trend in recent years.

    South Carolina school districts have offered 11th- and 12th-grade students AP classes for college credit since 1984. The classes prepare students for national AP exams at the end of the school year.

    In preparation for writing the last column on the best football for the decade of the 1950s, I asked Jimmy Horton to assemble as many players from the 1957 Heath Springs High School football team as possible.

    I wanted them to tell me their story firsthand concerning the last game that Coach R.L. Abstance coached against Springfield for the the state championship.

    Tabitha Reneé Trapps and Nathan DeMart Lineberger were married June 7, 2014, at New Hope AME Zion Church by the Rev. James Scott Jr.
    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Trapps and the granddaughter of Almetta Cunningham, all of Lancaster. She is a 1992 graduate of Lancaster High School and earned an associate’s degree in management in 2010.

  • Phillips-Wilson Wedding

    Rebekah Phillips and Ryan Watson were married at 5 p.m. Dec. 28, 2013, at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church by the Rev. Dale Myers.
    The bride is the daughter of Maurice and Zoe Phillips. She is the granddaughter of the late Ralph and Idell Dunn and of the late Sammie Lee and Lillian Phillips. She is a graduate of Winthrop University and works for the Chesterfield County School District.

    Susan Graves and Don Williams announce the engagement of their daughter, Whitney Williams, to Brice Blackmon, all of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 4 p.m. Nov. 8, 2014, at The Craig House.
    Miss Williams is a 2006 graduate of Lancaster High School and works for the City of Lancaster as an account clerk.
    Mr. Blackmon is the son of Alton and Diane Blackmon of Lancaster. He is a 2006 graduate of Lancaster High School and works as a CNC operator for Pattinson Sign Group.

    Melinda and Larry Flynn announce the engagement of their daughter, Anna Marie Flynn, all of Lancaster, to Derek Alexander Blackmon of Heath Springs.
    The wedding is planned for 3 p.m. Oct. 26, 2014, at Cares Lake Banquet Hall in Lancaster.
    Miss Flynn is the granddaughter of Guy Stacks of Lancaster and the late Carl Stacks. She is a 2010 graduate of Lancaster High School and earned a medical assistant’s degree in 2012. She works as a medical assistant.
